Nifty had one of the most spectacular series ever posting over 10% gains. After a quiet start the index shot up to over 2yr high ending the September series above 6000 mark. September series ended with Stock rollover of 85% (6- m avg. 85%) and Nifty rollover of 68 % (6-m avg. 69%). Gradual increments all along the expiry except for three sessions led the stock futures open interest to one of the highest ever participation. Average rollovers on top of this hefty position led to net addition of over 50mn shares expiry over expiry. On the other hand Nifty futures shed some participation during the second half led by the short covering. This coupled with lower rollovers led to a decline in opening participation of Nifty by around 5mn shares.
