*Market watchers noted that the poor showing for Germany’s far-left Die Linke party, meant that a fully left-leaning coalition in the Bundestag was now out of the question.*

*Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg Bank, said in a research note that a pact between the SPD, Die Linke and the Greens could have “impaired trend growth through tax hikes, reform reversals and excessive regulations.*

*Elsewhere, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said in remarks to a European Parliament committee that euro zone inflation could exceed the bank’s projections but price increases would likely be temporary.*

*Meanwhile, the U.K.’s opposition Labour party resumes its annual conference in Brighton Monday.*

U.K. energy stocks like BP were closely watched on Monday after panic buying over the weekend due to a truck driver shortage that left many gas stations in Britain without any fuel.

*Here are some events to watch this week:*

#Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to testify at a Senate Banking Committee hearing Tuesday
#European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde speaks Tuesday at the ECB Forum on Central Banking
#Japan’s ruling party votes to elect leader, Wednesday
#Central bank chiefs Andrew Bailey (BOE), Haruhiko Kuroda (BOJ), Christine Lagarde (ECB) and Jerome Powell (Fed) participate in an ECB Forum panel, Wednesday
#House Financial Services Committee hearing on the Fed, Treasury’s pandemic response, Thursday
#China Caixin manufacturing PMI, non-manufacturing PMI, Thursday
#Univ. of Michigan sentiment, ISM manufacturing, U.S. construction spending, spending/personal income Friday

*Currencies*
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed
The euro fell 0.2% to $1.1698
The British pound rose 0.2% to $1.3705
The Japanese yen fell 0.2% to 111.00 per dollar

*Investors also were keeping an eye on Europe. The lack of a clear winner in Germany’s election combined with a new batch of speeches from most central bankers may slow the rally down. In addition, investors’ eyes are cautiously monitoring the situation in China where both the energy and liquidity crises are worsening, increasing worries of a knock-on impact on other economies.*

*U.S. cases averaged about 120,000 per day over the last week, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, down from a 7-day average of more than 166,000 cases at the peak of this latest wave in early September. Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla said on Sunday that he thought the U.S. could return to normal “within a year” though annual vaccinations might be needed.*

In public health news, chief executive of Pfizer Inc. _ said the company is expecting to submit data from late-stage trials of its COVID-19 vaccine in 5- to 11-year-old children to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration within days, raising hopes that another key patient group will soon be eligible for shots.

All in all, it’s a positive story as we have a strong economic macro story underpinning everything. Optimism was reflected in central banks signaling their intent to remove pandemic-era stimulus gradually, which in turn was lifting bond yields.

Europe’s STOXX 600 index ended lower as declines in tech stocks offset gains in banks and energy, while German shares hit 10-day highs.

The oil price surge is stoking speculation that global inflation will prove longer-lasting than anticipated, forcing central banks to act and benefiting so-called reflation investments, which rise in tandem with rates.

*Coming on top of this year’s 300% surge in European gas prices, the price rises risk further inflaming inflation expectations and hastening the end of super-cheap money.*

Goldman Sachs forecast Brent to hit $90 per barrel by year-end, noting “the current global oil supply-demand deficit is larger than we expected, with the recovery in global demand from the Delta impact even faster than our above-consensus forecast.”

The rise in U.S. yields, especially on an inflation-adjusted basis, is also lifting the dollar. The dollar index rose 0.146%, with the euro down 0.15% to $1.1697.

*Worries persisted about China.*
A power supply crunch that is triggering an industrial contraction and pressuring the economic outlook is adding to concerns stemming from property firm Evergrande, which missed a bond coupon payment last week and faces another in coming days.

Hong Kong-listed shares in Evergrande’s electric car unit plunged as much as 26% after it warned it urgently needed a swift injection of cash.

Still, Chinese blue chip shares gained 0.5%, thanks to another cash injection from the central bank and hopes the release of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou would reset ties with the West.

Elsewhere, Brent closed at the highest since 2018 amid signs of a global energy crunch. While the benchmark met some resistance as it neared the $80-a-barrel level, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. said it could hit $90 by year-end as the market is in a bigger deficit than many realize.

*Some corporate highlights:*

Amazon.com Inc.’s price target was cut at Morgan Stanley, which said the online retailer’s profits could come under pressure as a result of a rising headcount and higher wages.

Facebook Inc. is pausing work on rolling out an Instagram Kids site after the social-networking company came under criticism for its negative effect on children, especially on teenage girls.

Wells Fargo & Co. agreed to pay $37 million to settle U.S. claims that it overcharged almost 800 commercial customers that used its foreign-exchange services.

*In Germany, preliminary results on Monday morning showed the center-left Social Democratic Party gaining the largest share of the vote with 25.7%. Angela Merkel’s right-leaning bloc of the Christian Democratic Union and Christian Social Union was seen with 24.1% of the vote. *

*But coalition negotiations, which could begin on Monday, are likely to take weeks or even months.*

Rising yields can increase the discount rate for tech-related stocks and highly valued sectors, while helping to boost shares of financials whose business models benefit from higher longer-end rates. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. _ shares advanced 2.3%, while the Financial Select Sector SPDR ETF _ rose 1.3%. The U.S. oil benchmark CLX21 settled at $75.45 a barrel on Monday, near a 3-year high.

*An energy crisis sweeping the globe was another catalyst for equities on Monday. Power shortages led to forced factory production cuts in China, while in the U.K., a shortage of truck drivers led to hoarding and declining inventories at gas stations.*

Analysts at Goldman Sachs hiked their oil-price forecast to $90 a barrel, citing the impact of what it said was the most bullish hurricane in U.S. history on supply. The Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF _ jumped 3.4% as oil prices continued to press higher.

“That’s because of supply constraints and strong demand,” said Kent Engelke, chief economist strategist at Capitol Securities Management, adding that unlike the Arab oil embargo of the 1970s, current energy shortages follow moves by Western governments to cut carbon emissions and curtail the fossil fuel industry, including by making it “prohibitively expensive” for banks to lend in the sector.

“But the technology is not there yet,” Engelke said of solar and wind energy alternatives.

Energy disruptions have highlighted what’s been a growing issue for the global economy, namely that supply hasn’t recovered as fast as demand in a variety of markets. Costco Wholesale _ last week said it imposed limits on purchases of toilet paper and water.

*Orders for durable goods surged 1.8% in August, largely thanks to more demand for Boeing jetliners, but continued supply shortages held back auto makers and remained a drag on the U.S. economic recovery. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.6% rise.*

*Investors continued to cast a wary eye on the impact of China Evergrande’s HK: _ debt troubles on the world’s second-largest economy, while elections in Germany, the No. 1 European economy, have so far failed to produce a decisive result in what’s expected to be months of coalition talks.*

*The clock also has been ticking for Congress to pass a funding measure to avoid a government shutdown at midnight Thursday, with gridlock in Washington also raising concerns about a potential U.S. default this fall.*

*House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that she expects the $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill to pass this week, but voting on the legislation may be pushed back from its original Monday timeline.*

*Congress must pass a new budget by the end of September to avoid a shutdown, and lawmakers must also figure out a way to increase or suspend the debt ceiling in October before the U.S. would default on its debt for the first time.*

*DC will start garnering more attention in the coming weeks as the political calculus around passing infrastructure bills and the debt ceiling debate likely guarantees some market moving headlines*

*Wall Street also heard from a number of Federal Reserve officials. Chicago Fed President Charles Evans, in a speech Monday morning, said he was more worried that the economy wouldn’t produce enough inflation rather than run too hot.*

*New York Fed President John Williams said he doesn’t expect the recent surge in inflation to last, predicting it will fall to around 2% next year, but also said a reduction in the central bank’s massive $120 billion in monthly bond purchases may be soon warranted.*

*But Fed Gov. Lael Brainard struck a more dovish tone Monday, sayings the central bank should maintain low interest rates and that the spike seen in inflation this year was transitory and the labor market was far from healed.*

*Dow books 4-day winning streak, but S&P 500, Nasdaq end lower as tech shares stumble. Bond Yield Spike Spurs Growth-Into-Value Rotation. As Treasury yields pushed higher after a hawkish tilt from the Federal Reserve last week, some of the world’s largest technology companies continued to sell off. U.S. government borrowing costs advanced for a sixth week on Monday, hurting tech stocks as investors bet on rising interest rates, while three-year high oil prices ignited the energy sector.*

*A slide in bonds sent the rate on the benchmark 10-year note briefly above 1.5% -- a level not seen since June. That’s prompted the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 to underperform major equity benchmarks. Meantime, economically sensitive companies -- like energy, financial and smaller firms -- advanced.*

*Traders pulled forward wagers on a rate hike after Fed Chair Jerome Powell said the central bank could start tapering its asset purchases in November, while officials updated their forecasts -- with half of them seeing tightening by the end of 2022. A spike in Treasury yields has added to concerns about lofty equity valuations, particularly in the tech industry, which has powered the bull-market rally.*

Yields are rising sharply, reflecting investors’ expectations about monetary tightening amid surging inflationary pressures. If yields climb higher, this could weigh especially on the overstretched growth stocks in the technology sector, which have low dividend yields. Investors might prefer the relative safety of government debt and fixed-coupon payments -- rather than buying severely overvalued stocks -- just as the Fed starts to reduce the pace of its stimulus program.

*Fed Governor Lael Brainard said the labor market may soon meet her yardstick for scaling back asset purchases, while the Covid-19 delta variant could raise upside risks for inflation. New York Fed President John Williams noted that moderating bond-buying may soon be warranted, and his Chicago counterpart Charles Evans said he sees “a first move” on raising rates in 2023.*

“We believe that these [bond market] moves have provided the spark for another ‘Value Rip’ across equity markets. In our view, the direction of longer-term interest rates should remain the #1 driver of market returns, sector rotation & thematic performance in the weeks ahead,” Chris Senyek of Wolfe Research said in a note to clients.

*An easing in Sino-U.S. tensions and Chinese authorities’ decision to pump in more cash to offset the fallout from real estate firm Evergrande’s woes offered encouragement to investors. There was also relief that Germany’s election outcome ruled out a pure left-wing coalition government.*

Technology stocks are higher valuation, meaning you’re paying for future growth, and higher interest rates are a brake on future growth. When yields rise, tech shares tend to underperform. Tech stocks are seen as sensitive to rising yields because increased debt costs can hinder their growth and higher rates can make their future cash flows appear less valuable.

US stocks moved higher after the Fed announced that it was likely to begin reducing its monthly bond purchases as soon as November and signalled that interest rate increases may follow more quickly than expected. US triplets rose close to 1% to register best gains since July 2021.The small cap Russell 2000 outperformed with gains close to 1.48%.

US dollar moved higher, post Fed announcement, near 93.45, 10 year fell near 1.30%, Cboe Vix also declined near 20 (but still trades in cautious zone).

Crude futures traded flat to mildly positive, WTI moved just above 72, Brent remained flat near 75.5.

Indian stocks turned cautious ahead of Fed meet and the crucial outcome on Evergrande payment obligation due today. Reality stocks were the star performers along with new driven names like Zee, in an otherwise dull market. Metal stocks also staged some comeback as fears on Chinese property defaults eased.
#AlliesFin

For the day watch for stock specific volatility on Weekly options expiry. Also watch for news on repayment obligation from Evergrande later during the day and for the end of 'traditional consolidation September' period and a breakout in mother market. Investors may complete the rebalance of portfolio as the mega events like Fed taper tantrum and Chinese property troubles may be out of the way by end of the week.

FedEx shares tumbled more than 9% after profit fell at the shipper last quarter because of rising labor costs. FedEx also cut its forecast for the full year.

Elsewhere, Governing Council member Madis Muller said the European Central Bank may boost its regular asset purchases once the pandemic-era emergency stimulus comes to an end.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 index provisionally closed up 1%, with leading the gains to rise 3.1% as most sectors and major bourses ended the session in positive territory.

Back in Europe, fresh data out Wednesday showed euro zone consumer confidence rising to 1.3 points in September versus August to -4.0, better than the -5.8 expected by economists, Reuters reported.

In Japan, the central bank left its main monetary policy settings unchanged. Markets in South Korea and Hong Kong were closed for a holiday.

A number of analysts had pegged November or December as a likely time frame for an official Fed announcement for tapering its monthly purchases of $120 billion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, with an eye toward concluding those purchases at in the middle of next year.

*The longer-term outlook for policy interest rates, which currently stand in a range between 0% and 0.25%, now shows benchmark interest rates potentially climbing as high as 1.8% by the end of 2024.*

For markets, worries about China’s indebted property company Evergrande subsided on Wednesday.

*Frankfurt-listed shares of China Evergrande surged 50% after a unit of the company, Hengda Real Estate Group, pledged to make an on-time interest payment on Thursday. Separately, China’s central bank reportedly injected liquidity as markets reopened after a two-day holiday and talk of a restructure of Evergrande has eased some of the initial panic on Wall Street about potential financial contagion akin to what occurred in 2008 when U.S. investment bank Lehman Brothers failed.*

*However, investors remain wary as Evergrande still faces interest payments on bonds in coming days. While the markets are rebounding, we think its to soon to think the Evergrande situation will blow over without causing more near- term market pain. Still, questions remain over whether the interest on Evergrande’s offshore U.S.-dollar denominated bond — also due Thursday — will be made.*

*The U.S. debt ceiling issue also was in focus Wednesday, after a group of former U.S. Treasury secretaries, including Henry Paulson, Timothy Geithner and Robert Rubin, sent a letter to Congressional leadership calling for Washington to avoid an “unprecedented default” that could “serious economic and national security harm.”*

*The House voted late Tuesday to keep funding the government and avoid a shutdown, but faced opposition in the Senate given the Republican party’s opposition to raising the debt ceiling.*

*The New York Federal Reserve Bank on Wednesday also announced it would double the amount each counterparty can park overnight a popular Fed repo facility to $160 billion a day, effective Thursday.*

In U.S. economic news, investors parsed an August update on existing home sales, which retreated as inventory and prices remained major concerns for prospective buyers. Existing-home sales dropped 2% to a seasonally-adjusted, annual rate of 5.88 million in August, the National Association of Realtors said. Compared with August 2020, home sales were down 1.5%.

But markets still ended the day much higher as the Fed appeared in no rush to hike rates. The Fed is split on the timing of the first interest rate hike. Wednesday’s so-called dot plot of projections showed nine of the 18 FOMC members expect a rate increase in 2022. That’s up from seven in June’s Fed projections.

The market is already pricing in tapering now and have promptly turned their attention to the date of eventual rate lift-off and the pace of rate hikes which, if anything, is a little more modest than markets had feared

Major averages have registered losses for September, a historically choppy month for stocks. The S&P 500 is down 2.8% so far in September, including a 1.7% drop on Monday for its worst day since May. Major averages attempted to rebound on Tuesday but failed with the Dow and S&P 500 finishing in the red for the fourth day in a row. The Dow is down about 3.1% in September.

At the center of investors’ concerns is embattled Chinese property developer Evergrande, which is facing a possible default if it can’t make millions of dollars in debt payments on U.S. dollar-denominated bonds this week. Evergrande’s shares in Hong Kong are down nearly 90% since July 2020 as China cracks down on real estate speculation. Investors worry about a step down in global economic growth if China slows its property market too much or lets Evergrande fail.

Oil prices climbed after U.S. crude stocks fell to their lowest levels in three years as refining activity recovered from recent storms.

*The Fed’s timeline for tapering stimulus and any shifts in expectations for interest-rate increases are key for investors, who have grown used to central-bank stimulus supporting asset prices. The revision follows a period of market volatility stoked by Evergrande’s woes. China’s wider property-sector curbs are also feeding into concerns about a slowdown in the economic recovery from the pandemic.*

*What markets are relieved by was that given the events of this week in terms of China, Evergrande, the debt ceiling dysfunction, some of the growth slowdown. Some of what we’ve been seeing in markets, I think the risk was that the Fed would announce tapering and a timeline today. I think that would have been an unexpected surprise that would have created some volatility and some negative reaction by investors, and that didn’t happen, and so investors are happy.”*

Investor concerns about financial contagion from a potential default by China’s giant property company Evergrande have somewhat abated, but investors are also watching developments in the U.S. Congress on raising the federal debt ceiling.

On Tuesday, the Dow fell 51 points, or 0.15%, to 33,920, the S&P 500 declined 0.08% to 4,354, and the Nasdaq Composite gained 32 points, or 0.22%, to 14,746. The Dow and S&P 500 marked a fourth straight day of losses, which was the worst stretch for the S&P 500 since mid-May.

U.S. equity indexes ended at about the same level they were at before the Fed announcement. Stocks had been stronger earlier in the session after Evergrande agreed to settle interest payments on a domestic bond, while the Chinese central bank injected cash into the banking system. The developments soothed fears of imminent contagion from the debt-laden property developer that had pressured equities and other riskier assets at the start of the week.

*Wall Street cheered Wednesday’s Federal Reserve decision to keep its massive bond-buying program and ultralow interest-rate regime in full swing to support financial markets and the economy through the pandemic — for now.*

*Stocks trimmed some of their gains after Fed Chairman Powell said plans to taper the central bank’s bond buying program could be announced in November after the Fed’s next policy-setting meeting. Fed officials also penciled in an interest-rate increase in 2022.*

*Stocks came off their highs after Fed Chair Powell said the central bank’s further progress test has been met on its inflation mandate and “many” members believe that test has been met on the employment mandate as well. This indicates the Fed is just about ready to begin removing stimulus.*

“My own view is the test for substantial further progress on employment is all but met,” Powell said during a press conference. “For me it wouldn’t take a knockout, great, super strong employment report. It would take a reasonably good employment report for me to feel like that test is met.”*

*The central bank has been buying $120 billion a month of Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities since the start of the Covid crisis. The Federal Open Market Committee voted unanimously to keep short-term rates anchored near zero on Wednesday.*

The Dow and S&P 500 still booked their largest daily percent gains since late July, while the Nasdaq scored its best session advance in about a month, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

While a taper announcement, maybe, is coming in November, that they didn’t do so today just reflects a still uber dovish committee

*Powell said there remains “a range of views” among Fed officials about the state of the U.S. economic rebound, while warning that higher interest rates next year aren’t set in stone, in an afternoon news conference.*

It looks like we are on track for a November tapering announcement. But again the “dot plots” now implying four rate increases, or a 1% increase, through the end of 2023 would be a “pretty significant rate of increases.” Dots are just dots. They are going to move. It’s not a done deal, or a forecast, just an estimate.

*Dow, S&P 500 score best day in 2 months as Fed’s Powell says tapering of bond purchases could be announced next month. The Treasury yield curve flattened after Federal Reserve officials signaled they would probably begin tapering their bond-buying program soon. The dollar strengthened versus its major peers, while oil gained. The Federal Reserve indicated it doesn’t see an imminent rollback of the monetary stimulus that has been supporting the economy throughout the pandemic.*

U.S. stock indexes closed out their best day in two months Wednesday, after the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell signaled the central bank may announce a pullback of its bond purchases in November and could start to raise interest rates in 2022, with both moves largely expected by market participants.

*The S&P 500 had jumped earlier, rising for the for the first time in five trading sessions, as concerns about China Evergrande Group’s debt woes eased. The benchmark index rose 1%, the biggest-one day increase since July. Shorter-maturity Treasury notes fell while longer-maturity debt edged higher, flattening the yield curve, after revisions to Fed’s dot-plot forecasts for fed funds target showed a 2022 median of 0.25%, up from 0.125% prior, while 2023 rate forecasts were also dragged higher.*

*If you take a step back, the Fed’s stance is still accommodative and it’s reasonable for the Fed to want to return to a state of normalcy if the economy is as robust as the data suggests. And given the recent volatility, it’s likely that investors are viewing the taper projection and potential 2022 rate hikes a vote of confidence that the recovery is on track.*

*If progress toward the Fed’s employment and inflation goals “continues broadly as expected, the committee judges that a moderation in the pace of asset purchases may soon be warranted,” the U.S. central bank’s policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee said Wednesday in a statement following a two-day meeting.*

*Fed Chair Jerome Powell said during a press conference that tapering could end around mid-2022 and that most on the committee favor a gradual pace. That could mean the Fed makes an announcement in November, potentially creating an eight-month taper process.*

*Earlier, basic resources and energy were among the leading gainers in the Stoxx Europe 600 index as commodity prices steadied after Beijing moved to contain fears of a spiraling debt crisis at Evergrande that could ravage demand from the property sector. China avoided a major selloff as trading resumed following a holiday, after the country’s central bank boosted its injection of short-term cash into the financial system.*

@AlliesFin
