Stocks, oil fall further on accelerating coronavirus concerns

Stocks and oil prices tumbled again on Tuesday and the benchmark U.S. debt yield hit a record low on growing concern about the effects of the spread of coronavirus on the global economy.

The market sell-off followed the largest losses in stocks in over two years on Monday and accelerated after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Americans should begin to prepare for community spread of the disease.

The Japanese yen strengthened against the dollar for a third session running, in a sign that traders are in search of relatively safer assets.

The flu-like virus has now infected more than 80,000 people, 10 times more cases than the SARS epidemic in 2003. Several European countries were dealing with their first infections, feeding worries about a pandemic.

The World Health Organization, however, has said the epidemic in China, where it began in December, peaked between Jan. 23 and Feb. 2 and has been declining since.

On Wall Street, where stocks fell the most in two years on Monday, the S&P 500 posted its largest back-to-back drop since August 2015.

“For the first time in a while we’re finally waking up to the fact that this issue could go on for a while and have a significant impact on Chinese and global economic growth and potentially the United States,” said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives for Charles Schwab in Austin, Texas.

“When people react to it because they don’t travel or go to restaurants or go shopping, that’ll have an immediate impact on the economy. It depends how long it goes and how wide the spread,” he said.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 879.44 points, or 3.15%, to 27,081.36; the S&P 500 lost 97.68 points, or 3.03%, to 3,128.21; and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 255.67 points, or 2.77%, to 8,965.61.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index lost 1.76% and MSCI’s gauge of stocks across the globe shed 2.31%.

MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan closed 0.14% higher, while Japan’s Nikkei futures lost 0.34%.

The risks are such that bond markets are betting that central banks will have to ride to the rescue with new stimulus.

Futures for the Federal Reserve funds rate <0#FF:> have surged in the last few days to price in a 50-50 chance of a quarter-point interest rate cut as early as April. In all, they imply more than 50 basis points of reductions by year end.

The indication of falling U.S. rates hit the dollar against a basket of its peers.

“The potential for the economic fallout from the virus to wash up on U.S. shores has cooled the dollar’s rally ... by knocking Treasury yields to multiyear lows,” said Joe Manimbo, senior market analyst at Western Union Business Solutions, adding that the downward pressure also came from higher expectations for the Federal Reserve to deliver more interest rate cuts.

The dollar index fell 0.361%, with the euro up 0.27% at $1.0881.

The yen strengthened 0.54% versus the greenback to 110.15 per dollar. Sterling was last trading at $1.3002, up 0.58% on the day.

The rush to bonds dragged yields on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes to a record low of 1.307%. The U.S. benchmark last rose 11/32 in price to yield 1.3421%, down from 1.377% late on Monday.

The 30-year bond set a fresh record low at 1.786 and last rose 17/32 in price to yield 1.8135%.

For the first time, the 10-year yield on Municipal Market Data’s benchmark scale for top-rated, tax-exempt municipal bonds fell under 1% to .98%.

Gold ran into profit-taking after hitting a seven-year peak overnight, and last dropped 1.6% to $1,634.59 an ounce.

Oil prices continued to fall as demand concerns linked to the virus’ spread outweighed supply cuts.

U.S. crude fell 3.11% to $49.83 per barrel and Brent was last at $54.76, down 2.74% on the day.

@AlliesFin Serve T.ME/ALLiESFiN's Post

However, if the change in methodology does result in a rise in the growth rate of reported cases, market sentiment will inevitably deteriorate, reversing the more upbeat tone of recent days as markets had become increasingly reassured that the virus will soon plateau

Still, there were glimmers of optimism as the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) told a news briefing that “we are not seeing dramatic increases in cases outside China.”

There are concerns China may be under-reporting the number of coronavirus cases in its country. A senior Trump administration official told CNBC the U.S. does “not have high confidence in the information coming out of China.” The official added China “continues to rebuff American offers of assistance.”

The New York Fed said it would shrink repo operations starting with Friday’s overnight offering. The Fed has been conducting repo offerings and Treasury-bill purchases in a bid to keep control of short-term interest rates and bolster bank reserves. The efforts had calmed markets since a September spike. Treasuries trimmed their gains for the day.

The euro traded near the lowest since 2017, while the U.K. pound gained and gilts retreated after Sajid Javid quit as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The FTSE 100 Index also declined.
Earlier, stock gauges in Japan, Shanghai, Hong Kong and South Korea all declined, though shares in Australia edged higher. Oil climbed even as the International Energy Agency said the coronavirus means global demand will drop this quarter for the first time in over a decade.

Meanwhile, in economic news, January consumer prices rose by a modest 0.1%, but ticked 0.2% higher once the figures were stripped out for food and energy prices. U.S. initial jobless claims for the week ending in Feb. 8 edged up 2,000 to 205,000, underlining the strength of the labor market.

On Capitol Hill, a pair of President Donald Trump’s nominees to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors — Judith Shelton and Christopher Waller — faced scrutiny from the Senate Banking Committee.

Still, the late session sell-off was relatively muted.

The fourth-quarter reporting season is nearing its final approach, with 378 companies in the S&P 500 having posted results. Of those, 71.2% have surprised consensus estimates to the upside, according to Refinitiv data.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 6.86 billion shares, compared with the 7.64 billion average over the last 20 trading days.

• Cisco Systems Inc. shares CSCO, -5.23% close down more than 5% after it reported second-quarter profit and revenue late Wednesday that came in slightly above Wall Street forecasts.
• PepsiCo Inc. PEP, +0.27% reported a sharp fall in fourth-quarter earnings and revenue that topped expectations, while raising its dividend by 7%.
Tesla Inc. shares TSLA, +4.78% slid after the electric vehicle maker on Thursday said it is planning to offer about $2 billion of common stock in an underwritten deal, but closed nearly 5% higher.

Oil prices erased early losses to settle higher.

Here are some key events coming up:
• China and the U.S. on Friday are scheduled to lower tariffs on billions of dollars of respective imports as part of the trade deal signed last month.

Currencies
• The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was little changed at 1,207.10.
• The euro declined 0.3% to $1.0841, the weakest in almost three years.
• The British pound advanced 0.7% to $1.3049, the strongest in almost two weeks on the largest rise in almost two weeks.
• The offshore yuan weakened 0.2% to 6.9885 per dollar.
• The Japanese yen strengthened 0.3% to 109.79 per dollar, the largest rise in almost two weeks.

Bonds
• The yield on 10-year Treasuries declined two basis points to 1.61%.
• The yield on two-year Treasuries fell less than one basis point to 1.44%.
• Germany’s 10-year yield decreased one basis point to -0.39%.
• Britain’s 10-year yield gained four basis points to 0.652%, the highest in more than four weeks.

Stocks end lower as market retreats from records on renewed coronavirus fears: A new method of diagnosing COVID-19 cases brings total deaths from the outbreak to 1,369, while confirmed infections rose to 60,329.

U.S. equities had a turbulent Thursday, fluctuating between gains and losses on mixed news about the coronavirus outbreak, only to fade after the Federal Reserve Bank of New York said it will further shrink repurchase agreement operations.

The Fed news late in the trading day erased what had been a small gain for S&P 500 Index, which closed lower for the first time this week. The benchmark had bounced back from session lows after the World Health Organization said a surge in coronavirus diagnoses didn’t necessarily indicate a spike in infections.

China recently deployed a revised methodology to diagnose the virus, sending the number of confirmed cases soaring, but many of those cases could be days or weeks old, according to the WHO. Traders are still trying to gauge the outbreak’s effect on the economy.

Stock indexes closed lower Thursday despite hitting fresh intraday highs after a change in the methodology used by China resulted in a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

The S&P 500 index lost 5.51 points, or 0.2%, to close at 3,373.94, after establishing an intraday record at 3,385.09. The Nasdaq Composite Index closed 13.99 points, or 0.1% lower, at 9,711.97, after hitting its own intraday record in afternoon dealings at 9,748.32.

Those ending levels still marked the second highest closes on record for all three benchmarks, following each posting record finishes on Wednesday.

China on Thursday reported 254 new deaths from the virus over the past 24 hours, while the number of new cases jumped 15,152, after the government applied a new diagnostic method in hard-hit Hubei province. The World Health Organization said Thursday that the total deaths from the outbreak stood at 1,369, while the total number of confirmed cases rose to 60,329.

The surge in reported cases reported today is a one-off change due to methodology and by itself, doesn’t imply an acceleration in the pace of infection.

24 hours, raising the mainland’s total to 40,171. The death toll grew by 97 to 910, surpassing the 774 attributed to the severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, a 2003 viral outbreak that originated in China.

*Meanwhile, the director-general of the World Health Organization warned Sunday that countries outside of China should be prepared for the spread of the coronavirus to accelerate.*

Earnings season also is in the final stretch this week. With nearly two-thirds of S&P 500 companies having reported through Friday, FactSet now expects profits to grow in the fourth quarter. With 324 of the companies in the S&P 500 having reported. Of those, 70.7% have beat Street estimates. That is cold comfort for *Apple* (fell as much as 1.9%), whose iPhone sales in China could plunge by as much as 50% due to the virus, according to analysts.
Shares of *Amazon.com, Inc*. rose 2.6% to score a third straight record close.

Volume on U.S. exchanges was 6.60 billion shares, compared with the 7.66 billion average over the last 20 trading days.

The euro declined after the region was buffeted by political headlines. German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s succession plan collapsed, and polls put Sinn Fein in place for a possible role in Ireland’s government, depressing the country’s banking stocks. European equities closed higher. In corporate news, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Sunday that German carmaker Daimler planned to cut up to 15,000 jobs as it intensified cost-cutting measures.

Elsewhere, extreme weather conditions caused by Storm Ciara led to the cancellation of hundreds of flights, railway services and sports matches across the U.K. and northern Europe on Sunday. Energy companies said hundreds of thousands of British homes lost power during the storm, the BBC reported on Monday.

*Here are some key events coming up:*

*S&P 500, Nasdaq close at records as investors look past coronavirus to solid corporate earnings: Earnings season moves into final stretch*

*With cases of the coronavirus outside of China on the rise and various companies pulling back from international meetings, investors are trying to figure out whether the rate of contagion is stabilizing. In the meantime, monetary authorities across emerging markets have stepped in to help shore up the financial system. The People’s Bank of China moved to keep liquidity ample Monday through reverse-repurchase agreements.*

But generally upbeat earnings, positive economic data and China’s recent stimulus have attracted buyers to the U.S. equities market. Energy company shares proved the exception, declining as West Texas crude fell below $50 a barrel. Treasuries and European bonds edged higher, and the dollar held steady versus a basket of its major peers.

Asia’s main equity gauges fell everywhere apart from Shanghai. Traders monitored the restart of Chinese factories and the possible chaos that may ensue as several hundred thousand people begin returning to work at companies like Apple Inc. supplier Foxconn. General Motors Co. will restart production in China beginning Feb. 15.

*The World Health Organization warned Monday that the spread of the coronavirus to people who have not visited China could be “the spark that becomes a bigger fire,” while urging nations to fight the epidemic together.*

*Expectations for the Federal Reserve to prop up the economy with easy financial conditions if the coronavirus spills over into the U.S., also helped to support stocks. Investors say a continuation of ultraloose monetary policy could explain the disconnect between depressed long-dated bond yields, a sign that investors are piling into haven assets, and records in major equity benchmarks.*

Coronavirus fears remain at the top of investors’ minds, The Fed’s liquidity support can help to support valuations, but “ultimately muted Asian GDP growth and earnings expectations” will be important to watch. As long as investors don’t perceive a threat to corporate earnings and the U.S. economy from the virus, then the market can continue to trade higher on better economic data and better-than-expected earning.

*Chinese factories started to reopen on Monday, but local government efforts to limit the spread of the virus has led some businesses to stay closed. A prolonged closure could exacerbate the nation’s slowdown and upend global supply chains that rely on Chinese manufacturers to keep retailers stocked.*

China’s health ministry on Monday said another 3,062 cases had been reported over the previous

*Change your Vision*

A wealthy man once had severe eye pain. He consulted many physicians but the ache persisted.
At last, he visited a monk who was known to treat such ailments. The monk advised that for sometime he should look at Green colors and not let his eyes fall on any other color.
It was a strange prescription, but the rich man decided to try it. He got a group of painters and directed them to paint green every object his eye was likely to fall on. When the monk went to visit him after a few days, the man's servants ran with buckets of green paint and poured it on him since the monk was wearing a red robe.
The monk laughed and said, "If only you had bought a pair of green spectacles, worth a few dollars, you could have saved these walls and trees and saved money.
You cannot paint the world green.
Change your vision and the world will appear accordingly.
