MARKETS NEWS :

The Government has announced fresh restrictions on External Commercial Borrowing (ECB). As per new norms, companies will now be able to raise only upto $20ml abroad for rupee expenditure and only with prior RBI approval for end use. All ECB above $20ml will have to parked overseas for use as only for foreign currency expenditure.

US Fed policy committee held interest rates unchanged at 5.25% for the ninth straight time.

FIIs can not buy Sical Logistics as their holding have gone below of 24% at their paid up capital and IFCI as their holding reached the trigger limit of 22% without RBI approval

Wipro has signed a agreement to acquire Nasdaq listed Infocrossing IT infrastructure management services firm at $600ml. -

Bharti Enterprise and Wal Mart signed agreement to set up 50:50 joint venture cash and carry business. -

Punj Lloyd has secured a Rs. 5.90bn contract from Bharat Oman Refineries. -

The Madras High Court dismissed Novartis's application on Glivec, a cancer drug, challenging the constitutional validity of section 3(d) in the Indian Patents Act, which prevents patenting of minor modifications to products and processes.

Tata Consultancy Services has stated that over 100-150 deals are expected to be in the offing in the financial services space over the next 12 months ranging from $5ml to $200ml. -

MARKET COMMENTRY : ( UPDATED IN LIVE MARKETS )

Our markets have opened with a downward gap due to weak global cues. There was a two day bounce back which ended yesterday and this was confirmed by a fall in open interest which indicated that it was short covering by bears. In the process, our markets made a second lower top (i.e. 4647,4634 and 4532) thereby confirming the short term downward trend. If the current fall is a short term one, then 4350 level on closing and 4300 level on intra day should not be broken.

WORLD NEWS :

Bear Stearns said they wouldn't redeem any more ! Can you beleive it? When someone as old and as large as Bear Strearns say they won't redeem any more, what do you think smaller Funds will soon say about their internal health?..Macquarie Bank of Australia said their investors could lose upto 25% or US$250 million in one of their Hedge fund that's seeing a run. This one looks and smells a lot like what's going to soon happen across Wall Street in the near future....American Home Mortgage Investment Corp said they've been cut off from credit don't have money to repay $300 million which they had already commited to redeem...You want more names? Absolute Capital Group Ltd. and Basis Capital Fund Management Ltd.
