@AlliesFin Serve Stock Market's Post

*The Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA was down 96.5 points, or 0.3%, at 34,072 after rising more than 600 points at its session high in early activity.*

On Wednesday, stocks gave up gains during Powell’s news conference to end mostly lower, with the Dow falling 0.4% and the S&P 500 shedding 0.2%, while the Nasdaq Composite eked out a tiny gain.

*The three major averages are solidly in negative territory this month, with the Nasdaq down more than 17% from its intraday high.*

What’s driving markets

*The U.S. economy sped up toward the end of 2021 before a late omicron surge, growing at an annual rate of 6.9% in the fourth quarter, its fastest pace in nearly four decades, as consumers spent more and businesses stocked back up. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast gross domestic product to rise by 5.5% in the fourth quarter after a slower 2.3% annualized pace in the third quarter.*

*While strong economic data could stoke expectations the Fed will be more aggressive in tightening policy, economists noted that inventory gains were a key driver, without which the economy would have expanded at just a 1.9% pace. Moreover, rising inventories could be read as a sign that supply-chain bottlenecks are easing, which would ease inflationary pressures.*

*The silver lining in today’s report is that the supply side of the economy is starting to catch up to demand, as evidenced by the large inventory build in Q4. Although inventory levels are still low, they have clearly inflected, which should begin to take pressure off inflation fairly soon.*

Investors were also continuing to wrestle with the outlook for interest rates and other aspects of monetary policy after the Fed concluded its first policy meeting of the year on Wednesday. While the statement from the Federal Open Market Committee didn’t surprise investors, the tone of Powell’s comments in his subsequent news conference did.

The central bank chief didn’t reject the notion that the Fed could hike at each of its meetings this year, and talked of the need to be “nimble.” He also said there was “quite a bit of room to raise rates without hurting jobs.”

*Fed-funds futures on Thursday showed that the chances of the Federal Reserve delivering five 25-basis-point rate hikes by year-end had risen to nearly 33% from 22% Tuesday.*

Powell also refused to rule out the prospect of half a percentage point, rather than quarter-point, increases in rates over the course of the hiking cycle..

The yield on the 2-year Treasury at 1.036% five minutes before the Fed decision, was at 1.175% Thursday.

*Powell’s comment that his core PCE inflation forecast had increased by about 20 basis points since December equates to a roughly 30 basis point increase in projected fed-funds rate.*

*He said fed-funds futures for the end of 2022 are up a bit more than that, which could mean that the yields could reverse in the next few days.*

*In other U.S. data, orders for durable goods fell a larger-than-expected 0.9% in December, while initial claims for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by 30,000 last week to 260,000, signaling that disruptions in the labor market tied to omicron are starting to fade.*

*Pending home sales dropped 3.8% in December, according to the monthly index released by the National Association of Realtors.*

Investors were also reacting to a deluge of earnings, while Apple Inc. AAPL was due to deliver results after the closing bell.

*Geopolitical tensions simmered, as Russia continues to build up troops along the Ukrainian border and diplomats scramble to avoid conflict in the region.*

*Fourth-quarter reporting season has hit full stride, with 145 of the companies in the S&P 500 having reported. Of those, 79% have delivered consensus-beating results, according to Refinitiv data. Analysts now see, on aggregate, year-on-year fourth-quarter earnings growth of 24.2% for the S&P 500, per Refinitiv.*

*U.S. stocks fail to hold early gains, rather coughed up another sizable advance, despite strong economic data. U.S. GDP saw fourth-quarter growth spurt, but market is back in sell mode. The dollar jumped and gold plunged as investors continued to reprice assets to account for the Federal Reserve’s pivot to restrictive policy.*

The S&P 500 erased a rally of almost 2%, while the Nasdaq 100 sank to its lowest since June. The Russell 2000 of small caps entered a bear market after tumbling over 20% from its peak. Tesla Inc. tumbled 12%, wiped out about $109 billion of its value as the electric-car maker pushed back introductions of new models amid supply-chain challenges. Intel Corp. dragged down chipmakers on a disappointing outlook. The two-year Treasury yield climbed. In late trading, Apple Inc. rallied on record sales that beat estimates, while Robinhood Markets Inc. slumped after revenue missed expectations. The dollar climbed alongside the two-year Treasury yield. U.S. natural gas futures spiked, a sharp move that could be a sign of bearish wagers being squeezed out of the market.

*Stocks are coming off three straight roller-coaster sessions, with the indexes seeing big swings each day this week. Despite wild intraday movement, the Dow is down just 0.3% on the week, while the S&P 500 is off by 1.6% and the Nasdaq is 3% lower.*

More than $5 trillion has been wiped out from stock values this year as traders struggled to price the outlook for interest rates. *Markets had been factoring in four quarter-point hikes in 2022, but that edged toward five after Fed Chair Jerome Powell suggested the economy and labor market could handle a faster pace if warranted. Morgan Stanley’s strategist Andrew Sheets is doubling down on a bet that U.S. stocks are turning from leaders to laggards as they struggle to adjust to an era of tighter policy.*

*Market volatility is not going away anytime soon as the ‘buy the dip’ crowd has a new motto, ‘sell the rally’. Today’s stock market rally did not last as corporate America reminded us that supply-chain troubles persist, and profit forecasts are not providing any reasons to be optimistic. Many traders are still processing what happened yesterday with the Fed.*

*The S&P 500 once again narrowly avoiding correction confirmation at the end of a session marked by a rally, selloff and recovery as investors juggled positive economic news with mixed corporate earnings, geopolitical unrest and the prospect of a more hawkish Federal Reserve.*

*During a Wall Street Journal Live event streamed on Twitter, Fed Bank of Cleveland President Loretta Mester said “the case is very compelling that we remove accommodation.”*

Though Fed fund futures are predicting nearly four rate hikes this year, a seismic change from a few months ago, longer-term rate expectations haven't budged sharply.

U.S. interest rate pricing is peaking at 1.5% by the third quarter of 2024, far lower than previous U.S. rate tightening cycles.

*Comments:*
“Wall Street was worried that a much hotter inflation report could have not only cemented four Fed rate hikes this year, but potentially made the May FOMC meeting a possibility for when the balance-sheet runoff could start,” said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at Oanda, referring to the Federal Open Market Committee.

“We’ve been saying for a while that we didn’t expect the peak in one-year inflation numbers until early 2022 and further supply chain disruptions from the omicron variant strengthen that case. But the more important question right now is the exact timing of when inflation might start to slow, since ultimately that will likely determine how aggressive the Federal Reserve ... will be,” LPL Financial asset allocation strategist Barry Gilbert said in a note.

“Fears about higher and persistent inflation have been well telegraphed in recent months. Today’s rise in the rate of inflation falls within investors’ expectations,” said Richard Flynn, managing director at Charles Schwab U.K.

“Bond markets are currently pricing in about a 90% probability that the Fed delivers four rate hikes in 2022, and today’s inflation data should not dissuade the central bank from delivering the first of those hikes in March,” said Jai Malhi, global market strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management.

*Omicron is yesterday's story now. The market isn't moving on Omicron but on earnings, Fed and economic data.*

Growth and technology stocks have been staging a comeback this week, with investors watching a variety of metrics to decide whether to buy the rally or brace for more declines.

*Also on the watchlist for this week is the unofficial kick-off of the fourth quarter earnings season with JPMorgan Chase & Co, Citigroup Inc and Morgan Stanley due to report their results on Friday.*

*Earnings may exceed expectations and that is what is keeping investors active despite knowing that the Fed is going to start tightening in the next several months. You'll also see less commentary on earnings calls referencing supply chain constraints this season.*

The healthcare index, was weighed down by shares of drugmaker Eli Lilly and Biogen throughout the day.

*The U.S. government Medicare program said that while it plans to cover Biogen's Aduhelm Alzheimer treatment it will require patients to be enrolled in a clinical trial, limiting access to the medication. This could also impact Eli Lilly, which is developing similar drugs.*

*Not all major central banks are tightening policy though. In China, a softer than expected reading on prices has drawn bets on policy easing. Five-year Chinese government bond futures rose eight ticks to an 18-month high before trimming gains. Yuan gains were also capped.*

*Oil prices hit two-month highs on Wednesday on tight supply as crude inventories in the United States, the world's top consumer, fell to their lowest since 2018, and as the dollar weakened and worries eased about the Omicron coronavirus variant.*

U.S. crude inventories fell 4.6 million barrels last week to 413.3 million barrels, their lowest since October 2018, the Energy Information Administration said. Analysts had forecast in a Reuters poll a 1.9 million-barrel drop.

U.S. crude inventories have dropped for seven consecutive weeks, and overall inventories have been tightening across the globe as major producers struggle to increase supply even as demand rises despite rising cases of Omicron.

The falling dollar was the main driver of higher oil prices. A weaker greenback makes dollar-denominated oil contracts cheaper for holders of other currencies.

Today's inflation report continued to reinforce the theme that gaudy price gains are not standing in the way of demand. It dosen’t seem, the Fed will overreact to this condition & the Fed to likely raise rates in March.

*Controlling inflation that has spiked to nearly a 40-year high is the "most important task" facing the Federal Reserve right now, Fed Governor Lael Brainard said in prepared remarks for a Senate hearing on Thursday on her nomination to become vice chair of the U.S. central bank.*

*"We are seeing the strongest rebound in growth and decline in unemployment of any recovery in the past five decades," Brainard said in comments to be delivered to the Senate Banking Committee. "But inflation is too high, and working people around the country are concerned about how far their paychecks will go. Our monetary policy is focused on getting inflation back down to 2 percent while sustaining a recovery that includes everyone. This is our most important task.*

Brainard is scheduled to begin her testimony at 10 a.m. EST (1500 GMT) in a session that could mark the start of a broader and potentially bitter partisan contest over the make-up of the Fed's seven-member governing board.

*Only four of those seats are filled right now, and pending Biden appointments, including for a second vice chair's slot overseeing financial regulation, could advance what he and his Democratic supporters feel should be a bigger Fed role on climate issues and a tougher hand with Wall Street*

*St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank President James Bullard on Wednesday upped his view of how fast the U.S. central bank should tighten monetary policy, saying he now believes four interest rate hikes may be in the cards this year.*

While stocks closed off the session’s best levels, the market was showing signs of relief that inflation pressures didn’t overshoot expectations.

Now the next test is will inflation pressure actually moderate. It seems it will, but I don’t think it will back off the 2% target range the market is expecting.

We still will have above-trend growth and above-trend inflation, such a mix could reignite the recent sharp rotation by investors into value stocks, but away from growth.

Worries about runaway prices, and the Fed’s response, have helped the S&P 500/Citigroup pure value index rise 5.5% this year as the S&P 500/Citigroup pure growth index has retreated 5.1%.

*However, climbing oil prices potentially could still add to consumer woes. Since year-end, oil prices have jumped nearly 10%, with WTI currently sitting at $82 per barrel, suggesting that inflationary pressures from energy are likely to re-emerge.*

*Investors now also are eager for a blueprint from the Federal Reserve on how it plans on reducing its balance sheet, including potentially selling assets, a tool Chairman Jerome Powell didn’t rule out Tuesday, in his confirmation hearing for a second term at the helm of the central bank.*

*Cleveland Fed President Loretta Mester on Wednesday said she backs the central bank shrinking its balance sheet “as fast as we can,” so long as the pace doesn’t hurt financial markets. Bullard said he favored a “passive runoff” in which the balance sheet declines as assets mature without being replaced.*

*Should the Fed start selling Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities, instead of letting them roll off the balance sheet, it would mark a major change in the past 10-12 years of monetary policy. What’s going to happen if your biggest bond buyer now becomes a seller?*

*In other economic news, the latest Federal Reserve Beige Book report on economic conditions showed solid growth in the ability of businesses to pass along price gains to customers in December, a departure from recent years. The U.S. economy grew at a modest pace in the final weeks of last year, but businesses’ expectations for growth over the next several months have cooled in some places.*

*Stocks rose as a report showing the fastest inflation in about four decades (the biggest annual increase since June 1982) was roughly in line with market expectations, with traders keeping their bets on a rate hike in March.*

The bond market reaction to the inflation data was fairly muted in part because yields have already surged since the start of the year, with traders bracing for the Federal Reserve to begin raising rates. Ahead of the report, positioning in the broad Treasury market was the most net-bearish since late 2017, according to the latest survey by JPMorgan Chase & Co.

*Commodity and retail companies led gains in the S&P 500. Electric-vehicle maker Tesla Inc. and Google’s parent Alphabet Inc. paced a rally in megacaps. Financial shares underperformed, with major banks set to report their results Friday. Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley tumbled, while Jefferies Financial Group Inc. slid after saying fixed-income trading revenue plunged 50% from a year earlier. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index had its worst session since May.*

On Tuesday, all three indexes gained ground, with the Nasdaq Composite leading the way with a gain of 1.4%.

*However, interest rates already moved sharply higher in the first week of 2022, sparking a sell-off in tech stocks. That suggests the hot inflation report, and future tightening by the Federal Reserve, may be at least partially priced in to the market.*

*What drove markets*

*Stocks were buoyed Wednesday as investors exhaled with relief after the latest reading on inflation, while running hot, wasn’t worse than anticipated.*

*The consumer-price index posted a monthly rise of 0.5% in December, as prices rose by a near 40-year high of 7% from a year ago, while also indicating elevated U.S. inflation could persist well into 2022.*

*The gain in the consumer-price index exceeded the 0.4% forecast of economists polled by The Wall Street Journal. Increases were driven largely by elevated costs for food, shelter and used cars, even as energy prices briefly fell from recent highs.*

*A separate measure of consumer inflation that strips out volatile food and energy prices rose 0.6% last month, the government said Wednesday. That pushed the increase over the past 12 months to 5.5% from 4.9%—a 31-year high.*

*Investors appeared to be comforted by the fact that inflation was not worse than feared, and that the Federal Reserve was unlikely to be more aggressive than expected in hiking interest rates and tightening monetary policy.*

The central bank's plan for easing accommodation to fight inflation includes raising interest rates, which analysts expect to start as soon as March, as well as tapering its bond buying program and reducing its asset holdings.

Last week, oil prices gained 5% after protests in Kazakhstan disrupted train lines and hit production at the country's Tengiz oilfield while pipeline maintenance in Libya lowered production to 729,000 barrels per day (bpd) from a high of 1.3 million bpd last year.

Kazakhstan's largest oil venture Tengizchevroil (TCO) is gradually increasing production to reach normal rates at the Tengiz field after protests limited output there in recent days, operator Chevron (CVX.N) said on Sunday. read more

Libyan production ticked up on Monday, and concerns about rising Libyan output overtook the market.

People remain concerned about what inflation looks like and how the Fed is going to act to mitigate the situation.*

Investors positioned for the prospect of higher interest rates as soon as March, with parts of Wall Street joining many economists in saying the Fed has waited far too long to hike. Traders also braced for a consumer-price report on Wednesday that could show a 7% headline year-over-year rise for December, a level which may not let up until the March reading.

*While still around some of its lowest level since mid-October, the Nasdaq avoided closing below its 200-day moving average, at 14,688.73, for the first time since April 21, 2020, according to Dow Jones Market Data. It also stayed above the 14,451.69 level that would have marked a correction, or 10% fall from its recent peak.*

It's the tension between large players in the market which have been reallocating from growth to value and retail investors who only have interest in the technology names. We've gotten to the point where you wonder if the roller coaster has peaked and is heading straight down. But fundamentally there's a lot of buyers in this market buying on the dip.

In an interview that aired on Monday, JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon told CNBC that the U.S. is headed for the best growth in decades, and that he’d be surprised if the Fed hikes by only four times this year. That’s more than the three hikes signaled by Fed officials in their December projections.

Economists at both Deutsche Bank _ and Goldman Sachs _ expect four rate hikes this year, and a reduction of the Fed’s more than $8 trillion balance sheet that could begin in the third quarter. But Deutsche’s researchers also see the possibility that policy makers might need to consider hiking interest rates at almost every meeting in 2022 “unless financial conditions notably tighten,” Jim Reid, head of thematic research, and others wrote on Monday.

Goldman’s chief economist Jan Hatzius said in a late Sunday note that “declining labor market slack has made Fed officials more sensitive to upside inflation risks and less sensitive to downside growth risks.”

Friday’s labor report came in at 199,000 jobs in December, worse than forecast, but it also showed a decline in the unemployment rate to a pandemic low and a rise in wages. The labor-market reading came after Fed minutes released last Wednesday signaled that policy makers are eager to tighten financial policy to battle inflation, with market-based projections pointing to at least three interest-rate increases this year.

Some analysts are adopting a much more sanguine view of the market’s outlook, despite the imminent tightening of financial conditions.

*On Monday, BlackRock Investment Institute’s global chief investment strategist, Wei Li, and others said that although central banks will move away from emergency stimulus, they won’t necessarily “hit the brakes by raising rates to restrictive levels.” In addition, the three rate hikes being penciled in by policy makers for this year is “more than we expected.” “We prefer equities and would use COVID-related selloffs to add to risk,” they wrote.*

Later in the week, investors will watch the confirmation hearing of Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, followed by one for Lael Brainard, the Fed governor who has been nominated to become the central bank’s No. 2 after Vice Chairman Richard Clarida steps down. Clarida announced late Monday he would resign effective Jan. 14, two weeks before his term was due to end.

Earnings season also begins this week, with financial heavyweights JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup and Wells Fargo release quarterly results Friday.

*Which companies were in focus?*

Lululemon Athletica LULU warned fourth-quarter earnings and revenue would be at the low end of its target, citing the impact of the omicron variant on capacity and staff. Shares finished 1.9% lower.

*U.S. stocks ended down but well off their lows of the day, with the Nasdaq staging a furious comeback late in the session as some investors appeared to be hunting for bargains even as they worried about rising interest rates.*

Stocks rebounded as dip buyers emerged to blunt a five-day selloff -- the longest losing streak since September. Nasdaq ekes out gain, S&P 500 and Dow extend losing streaks as Wall Street warns of more than 3 Fed rate hikes in 2022.

While the Nasdaq pared its losses in the afternoon session it had earlier fallen as much as 10.37% below its intraday record level reached on Nov. 22.

*Large-cap tech stocks were under pressure in early trading but were able to stabilize and then move higher as the day wore on. Nvidia, Tesla and Apple all closed higher after losing ground earlier in the session.*

*After sinking 2% earlier Monday, the S&P 500 almost wiped out its losses, buoyed by signs that the omicron coronavirus variant may be peaking in New York. The Nasdaq 100 turned green after the gauge of giants like Apple Inc. and Microsoft Corp. dropped as much as 8.5% from its November record. Investors have been on edge as the Federal Reserve prepares to raise rates and the resurgent virus threatens economic growth.*

*The rough start to the year for stocks has come as interest rates have spiked. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield briefly traded above 1.8% on Monday morning after ending 2021 near 1.51%, but settled back below that level later in the day.*

There are some real risks around rate hikes and whatnot, but if you look at some of the major tech companies that are falling, these companies have a massive cash moat. We’re in a fairly good spot, and these are great buy-on-the-dip opportunities right now.

*Three Wall Street firms — Goldman Sachs Group Inc., JPMorgan Chase & Co., and Deutsche Bank AG — said they see the Fed delivering more than the three rate hikes that policy makers have penciled in for this year.*

*The Fed will likely raise rates four times this year and will start its balance-sheet runoff process in July, if not earlier, according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. A key measure of U.S. inflation -- set to be released Wednesday -- is anticipated to have increased further in December, putting additional pressure on the central bank to tighten policy.*

In the past three decades, there have been four distinct periods of rate-hike cycles by the Fed. On average, technology, which has been under pressure amid prospects of earlier and faster rate increases, is among the best-performing sectors during those cycles.

*What drove markets*

*Along with watching rising bond yields, investors are also anxiously awaiting this week's inflation data and what it will mean for U.S. Federal Reserve monetary policy tightening. The maket is also worried about the impact of the latest coronavirus case numbers on the fourth quarter earnings season which kicks off later this week.
