Stocks in Asia Advance After Trade Progress: Markets Wrap
Asian stocks began the week with gains after signs of progress in U.S.-China trade negotiations, though sentiment was capped as investors voiced skepticism on the accord.
Shares in Seoul and Sydney opened higher and equity futures pointed higher in Hong Kong -- Japan will be shut for a holiday. S&P 500 futures edged up after the U.S. equities gauge climbed to within 1.8% of a record on Friday. President Donald Trump said the two sides agreed to the outlines of a deal that could be signed as early as next month. The yuan was steady after Friday’s advance and Treasury futures ticked up following the pickup in yields last week.
The Singapore dollar rose after the Monetary Authority of Singapore eased monetary policy for the first time since 2016.
The U.S. won’t increase tariffs on China as scheduled this week as part of a “phase one” trade accord. Beijing will make large agricultural purchases and take steps on intellectual property, financial services and the yuan. A Chinese statement didn’t refer to a deal, saying only that “the two sides have made substantial progress,” and mentioning neither the freeze on duties nor the farm-goods commitment.
“Let’s not get carried away,” said Raoul Leering, head of international trade research at ING Bank NV. “There is a very tough journey ahead for the U.S. and Chinese negotiators to cut a deal that really has substance.”
Elsewhere, the pound retreated as European Union negotiators warned that Brexit plans from U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson are not yet good enough to be the basis for an agreement.
Focus now turns to earnings season that begins with big U.S. banks including JPMorgan Chase & Co., Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley. Trading may be think due to the Columbus Day holiday in the U.S. as well as the closure in Tokyo.
Here are some key events coming up this week:
The International Monetary Fund and World Bank host meetings to discuss economic development and finance.
St. Louis Fed President James Bullard speaks at Bloomberg’s monetary and financial policy conference in London. Riksbank Governor Stefan Ingves also speaks there. Atlanta Fed President Raphael Bostic speaks in Atlanta. San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly gives a speech in Los Angeles.
Wednesday bring a monetary policy decision in South Korea.
U.S. retail sales are forecast to increase for a seventh straight month. Sales in the “control group” are also expected to rise. Consumer spending is carrying the weight of U.S. economic growth so the data will be monitored closely for any signs of slowing.
China releases third-quarter GDP, September industrial production and retail sales data on Friday.
Here are the main moves in markets:
Stocks
Futures on the S&P 500 Index rose 0.3% as of 8:08 a.m. in Hong Kong. The underlying gauge added 1.1% on Friday.
South Korea’s Kospi Index climbed 1.3%.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 0.9%.
Currencies
The yen was at 108.36 per dollar, down 0.1%.
The offshore yuan rose 0.1% to 7.0771 per dollar.
The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index was steady after dropping 0.4% on Friday.
The euro bought $1.1030, down 0.1%.
The British pound slid 0.5% to $1.2605.
Bonds
Futures on 10-year Treasuries added 0.1%. The yield on 10-year notes gained six basis points to 1.73% on Friday.
Australia’s 10-year yield rose seven basis points to 1.08%.
Commodities
West Texas Intermediate crude gained 0.2% to $54.90 a barrel.
Gold decreased 0.2% to $1,485.85 an ounce.

Interesting insight.....
Why does Apple always come up with three versions of iPhone?
Let's understand this by an example.
Let's say you are an ice-cream lover. You find great value in eating ice-cream.
One fine day, you are out to treat yourself. Shopkeeper provides you below options:
One Scoop Ice Cream: 13 bucks
Two Scoop Ice Cream: 19 bucks
Three Scoop Ice Cream: 19.5 bucks
The negligible difference between the prices of 2nd and 3rd options gets your attention.
This is called Decoy Effect.
A 2nd option is just a Decoy option. Companies provide decoy option so that customer can compare Decoy option with an expensive option (and select the expensive one).
In the absence of a decoy option, the customer will compare: 13 bucks vs 19.5 bucks - and may probably go with a cheaper option.
But with decoy option, the customer now compares 19 bucks vs 19.5 bucks - and most likely selects the expensive option.
Can you see a similar pattern in the pricing of iphone11 by Apple?
iPhone: $ 699
iPhone Pro: $ 999
iPhone Pro max: $ 1099
Yes, Apple does use Decoy effect to drive consumer to buy the expensive version of their product. Not only they are making quality products, but also they are not leaving any stone unturned when it comes to marketing and selling their products.
Explained very well in Dan Ariely's book "Predictably Irrational".

*Asia markets set to trade lower amid dampened expectations for US-China negotiations*
_*KEY POINTS*_
- _Asia stocks were set to trade lower on Thursday amid dampened expectations for a trade deal between the U.S. and China._
- _Investors will watch for market reaction to a South China Morning Post report that said the U.S. and China made no progress in deputy level trade talks this week._
- _U.S. stock futures tumbled following the SCMP report, with Dow Jones Industrial Average futures plunging more than 300 points at one point._
*Asia stocks were set to trade lower on Thursday* amid dampened expectations for a trade deal between the U.S. and China.
Futures pointed to a lower open for Japanese shares, the Nikkei futures contract in Chicago was at 21,385, as compared to the Nikkei 225′s last close at 21,456.38.
Meanwhile, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dipped fractionally in early trade.
Investors will watch for market reaction to a South China Morning Post report that said the U.S. and China made no progress in deputy level trade talks this week. In discussions that were held earlier in the week, China refused to discuss the issue of forced technology transfers, the report said.
The SCMP report also said that high-level trade negotiations including Chinese Vice Premier Liu He would be cut to one day now, with the delegation from Beijing set to leave Washington on Thursday instead of Friday as originally planned.
The trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing this week were highly anticipated. The two largest economies have struggled to reach a deal to end their trade war that has now lasted for more than a year. Washington and Beijing have slapped tariffs on billions of dollars worth of each other’s goods.
Markets in Taiwan are closed on Thursday for a holiday.
*U.S. stock futures tumbled* following the SCMP report, with Dow Jones Industrial Average futures plunging more than 300 points at one point. They pointed to a implied opening drop of 284.01 points for the Dow at Thursday’s open stateside, as of 7:05 p.m. ET Wednesday. S&P 500 and Nasdaq-100 futures also pointed to declines for the two indexes at Thursday’s open on Wall Street.
The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of its peers, was last at 99.118 after bouncing from levels below 99.0 yesterday.
The Japanese yen, often seen as a safe-haven currency in times of market turmoil, strengthened to 107.08 per dollar after seeing lows above 107.2 in the previous session. The Australian dollar changed hands at $0.6714 after seeing levels above $0.675 earlier in the week.

*Stocks in Asia trade lower amid US-China trade uncertainty*
*_KEY POINTS_*
- _Stocks in Asia slipped in Wednesday morning trade amid mounting uncertainty on the U.S.-China trade front ahead of expected high level negotiations between the two economic powerhouses later this week._
- _Washington expanded its trade blacklist to include some of China’s top artificial intelligence firms on Monday, punishing Beijing for its treatment of predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities._
- _China’s Ministry of Commerce said the U.S. should “stop interfering” in the country’s internal affairs and “remove” the relevant entities from the list “as soon as possible.”_
- _Those latest developments cloud the outlook for the upcoming U.S.-China trade negotiations, set to kick off on Thursday amid the looming prospect of more tariffs from Washington on goods from Beijing._
Stocks in Asia traded lower Wednesday morning amid growing uncertainty over the high-level trade negotiations between the U.S. and China due to commence later this week.
The Nikkei 225 in Japan slipped 0.84% in early trade, while the Topix index shed 0.7%. In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 declined 0.9% as most of the sectors traded lower.
Overall, the MSCI Asia ex-Japan index shed 0.28%.
Markets in South Korea are closed on Wednesday for a holiday.
*US-China tensions*
Investors watch for market reaction to overnight developments in U.S.-China tensions. Washington expanded its trade blacklist to include some of China’s top artificial intelligence firms on Monday, in response to Beijing’s alleged treatment of predominantly Muslim ethnic minorities. For its part, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the U.S. should “stop interfering” in the country’s internal affairs and “remove” the relevant entities from the list “as soon as possible.”
Those latest developments cloud the outlook for the upcoming U.S.-China trade negotiations, set to kick off on Thursday amid the looming prospect of more tariffs from Washington on goods from Beijing. The White House has scheduled an increase in U.S. tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese goods to 30% from 25% on Oct. 15. U.S. President Donald Trump has said the increase in duties will kick in if no progress is made in bilateral trade negotiations.
The protracted trade fight between the U.S. and China has already lasted for more than a year, with both parties slapping tariffs on billions of dollars worth of each other’s goods, denting investor sentiment and raising fears over the outlook for the global economy.
Overnight on Wall Street, stocks tumbled amid the dented hopes for a U.S.-China trade deal. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 313.98 points to close at 26,164.04 while the S&P 500 slipped 1.6% to end its trading day stateside 2,893.06. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.7% to close at 7,823.78.

Soon to be reality in INDIA ?
An Illiterate Tribal went to a Bank for a Loan of INR 2,00,000/- to buy Buffaloes.
The Branch Manager asked what Collateral Security will he offer.
Since the Tribal didn't Understand the Concept, the Branch Manager explained in detail about Collateral Security.
The tribal kept his house as Collateral and the Loan was sanctioned for INR 2,00,000/- @ 9% interest for 5 Years.
In 6 months the Tribal repaid the entire Loan. The Branch Manager was very happy and asked him what he was doing with the excess Money in the hope of Getting his FD target fulfilled.
The Tribal said he kept it in his house locker.
The Manager then pitched for his FD deposit saying that the Bank will give 7 % interest and that his Money will Grow.
Now Came the interesting Part
The Tribal asked him
.
.
.
.
.
.
"What Collateral Security will Your Bank offer Me to keep my Money in Bank?
The question needs to be asked now, only with the intention of safeguarding our own Money.

I love this analogy!
You are holding a cup of coffee when someone comes along and bumps into you or shakes your arm, making you spill your coffee everywhere.
Why did you spill the coffee?
"Because someone bumped into me!!!"
Wrong answer.
You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup.
Had there been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.
*Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.*
Therefore, when life comes along and shakes you (which WILL happen), whatever is inside you will come out. It's easy to fake it, until you get rattled.
*So we have to ask ourselves... “what's in my cup?"*
When life gets tough, what spills over?
Joy, gratefulness, peace and humility?
Anger, bitterness, harsh words and reactions?
Life provides the cup, YOU choose how to fill it.
Today let's work towards filling our cups with gratitude, forgiveness, joy, words of affirmation; and kindness, gentleness and love for others.
(Shared from a friend whose cup is full of goodness and inspiration.)

I loved the concept:
There are four yugas widely accepted in Hinduism. They are:
1. Satya yug
2. Treta yug (Ramayana)
3. Dwapara yug(Mahabharata)
4. Kal yug(Present)
In Satya yug, the fight was between two worlds (Devalok & Asuralok). Asuralok being the evil, was a different WORLD.
In Treta yug, the fight was between Rama and Ravana. Both rulers from two different COUNTRIES.
In Dwapara yug, the fight was between Pandavas and Kauravas. Both good and evil from the SAME FAMILY.
Kindly note how the evil is getting closer. For example, from a DIFFERENT WORLD to a DIFFERENT COUNTRY to the SAME FAMILY.
Now, know where is the evil in Kaliyug???
It is inside us. Both GOOD AND EVIL LIVE WITHIN. The battle is within us. Who will we give victory to, our inner goodness or the evil within??
Think, identify and fight.
