@AlliesFin Serve T.ME/ALLiESFiN's Post

@AlliesFin :

PAY RENT

Have we failed in bringing up.our 'modern' kids?

A very distressed neighbour shared that he had driven home after a long day at work. As he entered, he sa w his wife in bed with fever. She had laid out his dinner on a tray.

Everything was there just as he wanted it. The dal, vegetables, salad, green chutney, papad and pickles... *"How caring,"* he thought, *“Even when she is unwell, she finds the strength to do everything for me.”*

As he sat down to eat, he realised that something was missing. He looked up at his grown up daughter who was watching TV and said, *"Beta (child), can you get me my medicine and a glass of water, please?"*

She rolled up her eyeballs to show her displeasure at being disturbed, but did the favour nevertheless.

A minute later he realised that salt was missing in the dal.

He said, *"Sorry beta, can you please get me some salt?"*

She said, *"Ufff!"* and got the salt but her stomping shoes made it clear that she did not appreciate the disruption.

A few minutes later he said, *"Beta …”*

She banged the TV remote on the table and said, *"What is it now Dad? How many times will you make me get up? I too am tired; I had a long day at work!"*

The man said, *"I'm so sorry beta…"*
Silence prevailed.

The man got up and placed the dishes in the kitchen sink and quietly wiped the tear escaping his eye.

My heart wept... I often wonder; *Why is it that the youngsters of the so called modern world behave like this? Have we given them too much freedom to express? Have we failed to discipline and give them the right values?*

*Is it right to treat children as friends?* Think of it this way, they have lots of friends. But they have only one set of parents. If they don't do 'parenting', who will?

Today the *‘self-esteem’* of even a new born or an infant is being talked about; but what about the self-esteem of the parents? Are they supposed to just fan the egos of their children, while the children don't care two hoots about theirs?

Often parents say, “Aajkal ke bachhe sunte kahaan hain (Where will you find obedient children in these times)?” Why?

The other day, we were at a dinner party. All the seats were occupied except for one bean bag. One of our fifty-something friends told his teenaged daughter to move to the bean bag, so that he could sit on the high back chair she occupied.

She said, *"Why can't you sit on the bean bag?”*

I was zapped; we all knew that the father had a back ailment, and even otherwise… Well!

Later as everyone was taking leave of the host, the same guy realised that he had left his car keys inside. He asked his daughter to go and get them.

*“Why can’t you go and get them yourself? I am not your maid!"*

I looked away in disgust and disbelief. The poor guy had no option but to make light of the situation saying, *"Ya, Ya, but Daddy is your eternal servant my princess!"*

He went inside to fetch the car keys. This is what our social behaviour has become! Why?

If we need to teach children about self-respect, self-esteem and self-confidence, we also need to tell them that howsoever big and rich and famous they may be, their parents shall always be their parents… children can never be their equals, let alone be their bosses!

*Remember to Pay-*

*RENT - Respect, Empathy, Niceness, and Time!*

*I ALWAYS ADVISE PARENTS TO BE PARENTS AND NOT FRIENDS*. Your kids can have n number of friends but have only ONE set of parents.

So don't be afraid to set rules and make the children obey them

It turned out to be extremely sanguine for local equity mrkts, which going from strength to strength, concluded at day’s highest points, aided by short-covering ahead of F&O expiry. Trading for the day began on a firm note, as traders took encouragement with report that India's monsoon, is likely to be a robust & healthy one this year provided there isn't a surprise El Nino phenomenon.

@AlliesFin Serve T.ME/ALLiESFiN's Post

@AlliesFin

Most Stanford students fail this challenge. Here's what we can learn from their mistakes.

You’re a student in a Stanford class on entrepreneurship.

Your professor walks into the room, breaks the class into different teams, and gives each team five dollars in funding. Your goal is to make as much money as possible within two hours and then give a three-minute presentation to the class about what you achieved.

If you’re a student in the class, what would you do?

Typical answers range from using the five dollars to buy start-up materials for a makeshift car wash or lemonade stand, to buying a lottery ticket or putting the five dollars on red at the roulette table.

But the teams that follow these typical paths tend to bring up the rear in the class.

The teams that make the most money don’t use the five dollars at all. They realize the five dollars is a distracting, and essentially worthless, resource.

So they ignore it. Instead, they go back to first principles and start from scratch. They reframe the problem more broadly as “What can we do to make money if we start with absolutely nothing?” One particularly successful team ended up making reservations at popular local restaurants and then selling the reservation times to those who wanted to skip the wait. These students generated an impressive few hundred dollars in just two hours.

But the team that made the most money approached the problem differently. They realized that both the $5 funding and the 2-hour period weren’t the most valuable assets at their disposal. Rather, the most valuable resource was the three-minute presentation time they had in front of a captivated Stanford class. They sold their three-minute slot to a company interested in recruiting Stanford students and walked away with $650.

The five-dollar challenge illustrates the difference between tactics and strategy. Although the terms are often used interchangeably, they refer to different concepts. A strategy is a plan for achieving an objective. Tactics, in contrast, are the actions you undertake to implement the strategy.

The Stanford students who bombed the $5 challenge fixated on a tactic—how to use the five dollars—and lost sight of the strategy. If we focus too closely on the tactic, we become dependent on it. “Tactics without strategy,” as Sun Tzu wrote in the Art of War, “are the noise before defeat.”

Just because a $5 bill is sitting in front of you doesn’t mean it’s the right tool for the job. Tools, as Neil Gaiman reminds us, “can be the subtlest of traps.” When we’re blinded by tools, we stop seeing other possibilities in the peripheries. It’s only when you zoom out and determine the broader strategy that you can walk away from a flawed tactic.

What is the $5 tactic in your own life? How can you ignore it and find the 2-hour window? Or even better, how do you find the most valuable three minutes in your arsenal?

Once you move from the “what” to the “why”—once you frame the problem broadly in terms of what you’re trying to do instead of your favored solution—you’ll discover other possibilities lurking in plain sight.

@AlliesFin Serve T.ME/ALLiESFiN's Post

11 basic financial planning steps for women @ALLIESFIN

• She must ensure that as a couple her husband has bought a Term Insurance plan.

• She should advise her husband to buy loan insurance for any running loan, be it a home loan or a car loan.

• She can suggest her husband to get a Life Insurance Policy effected under Married Women's Property (MWP) Act.

It will be instrumental in transferring her husband's assets only to her and the children even in the face of challenges like creditors, family disputes, property distribution, bank loans and business loss.

• Women should ensure that family accounts including a statement of all assets and investments are maintained properly

• Custody of passwords for all financial investments must be with the woman.

• Ensure that all investments made are in joint names

• Ensure you are the nominee for insurance policies.

• Working woman should buy adequate life Insurance for herself because in that way she can ensure that in case she faces some uncertainty, her husband will continue getting the financial support from her end.

• Working woman should invest a certain sum of her money towards her own mother's financial independence.

• Last but not the least, learn to earn. “Financial independence will set you truly free. This can be through education – learn formal and informal skills to give yourself the ability to earn a living for your family and support yourself during the worst events,”

1. Data matters.

We humans are drawn to anecdotes and illustrations, but looks can be deceiving. Always base your forecasts on data, not qualitative arguments. Euclid’s Elements was one of the earliest texts on geometry, yet none of its oldest extant fragments include a single drawing.

Torture the data until it confesses, but don’t frame the data to the story. The data-mining trap is easy to fall into.
Start with base rates. The assumption that nothing changes and that an event is as likely in the future as it was in the past is a good starting point, but not the end point. Adjust this base rate with the information you have at the moment.
2. Don’t make extreme forecasts.

Predicting the next financial crisis will make you famous if you do it at the right time. It will cost you money and reputation at all others. Remember that there are only two kinds of forecasts: Lucky and wrong.

3. Reversion to the mean is a powerful force.

In economics as well as politics, extremes cannot survive for long. People trend towards average and competitive forces in business lead to mean reversion.

4. We are creatures of habit.

If something has worked in the past, people will keep doing it almost forever. This introduces long-lasting trends. Don’t expect them to change quickly even with mean reversion. It is incredible how long a broken system can survive. Just think of Japan.

5. We rarely fall off a cliff.

People often change their habits in the face of a looming catastrophe. But for that behavioral change to occur, the catastrophe must be salient, the outcome certain, and the solution simple.

6. A full stomach does not riot.

Revolutions and uprisings rarely occur among people who are well fed and feel relatively safe. A lack of personal freedom is not enough to spark insurrections, but a lack of food or water or widespread injustice all are.

The Tiananmen Square protests in China were triggered by higher food prices. So too was the Arab Spring.

7. The first goal of political and business leaders is to stay in power.

Viewed through that lens, many actions can easily be predicted.

8. The second goal of political and business leaders is to get rich.

Combined with the previous rule, this explains about 90% of all behavior.

9. Remember Occam’s razor.

The simplest explanation is the most likely to be correct. Ignore conspiracy theories.

10. Don’t follow rules blindly.

This applies to these rules as well as all others.
