The Theory of Interest Rate Parity says
If the interest rate in:
Country 1 = 2%
Country 2 = 6%
You can borrow money from country 1 at 2% and invest it in country 2 at 6% and make a 4% risk-free return (arbitrage) on borrowed money
if such a situation exists, every last capital in the world would exploit this situation,
this will increase the demand for currency 1 and increase the supply of currency 2,
thus, currency 1 must appreciate and currency 2 must depreciate until this 4% gap is fully exploited,
In other words, currency 2 must depreciate by 4% wrt currency 1
sounds logical, right?
but it doesn't always work linearly.
Telegram.me/AlliesFin
2021
USA interest Rate: 1%
India Interest Rate: 5%
USD/INR: 75
2022
USA interest Rate: 4%
India Interest Rate: 6%
USD/INR: 82
The interest rate differential has gone from 4% to just 2%
but INR has depreciated by 9%
shouldn't INR depreciate less wrt USD, since the interest rate parity has narrowed now?
Not really,
One major reason why INR is depreciating so rapidly is a rapid flow of USD out of India,
Think about this:
If Indian equity markets grow by 12%, US investors don't make 12% returns
they make: 12% (minus) currency loss
so if INR depreciates by 4%
they only make 8% return.
compare this to an interest rate of 4% in the US today
and PE ratio of 20+ in India (highest among its peers)
wouldn't you be much better off just parking the money in your USD bank account,
then invest in a foreign country trading at high valuations (vs emerging market peers) with its own set of economic risks and currency risks?
Is it worth the trouble for an extra 4% return in the best-case scenario?
I don't think so.
--
Now put yourself in the shoes of a US investor,
if you invested money in Indian Equities in 2021
equity returns : 0%
currency depreciation: 9%
total return: -9%
Interest Rates have risen by 3-4% in the western world since 2021
US govt bonds today are yielding 4%
UK govt bonds are yielding 5%
why would anyone sitting in US & UK take the additional risk of investing in a foreign economy (trading at 20-year high valuations) for just a 3-4% extra return?
--
So what is the solution?
RBI can increase Indian interest rates to increase the interest differential again,
but guess what?
this will increase Indian bank FD rates, Govt bond yields, even liquid MFs yields will increase to 7% or more
Given the high valuations of our Equity markets,
domestic investors will start shifting money from Equity to Debt (which is now giving 2% more returns than just a year ago)
Another negative for Indian equity markets.
--
An increasing cost of capital is never good for Equities.
India has a good long-term story, but in the short to mid-term if money keeps flowing out of Equities, they are bound to correct, it's only a matter of time.

Make In India: India’s defence exports jumps 334% in last 5 years; supplies to 75 countries
https://wap.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/defence-exports-up-334-in-last-5-yrs-now-exporting-to-75-nations-govt-122092500581_1.html
The Indian defence ecosystem is spreading its arms overseas as military exports have jumped by 334% in the last five years, which involves supplies of arsenals to more than 75 countries around the globe.
The Defence Ministry has set a target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore of defence production by 2025, which will include export of Rs 35,000 crore.
India’s defence exports
◆ 2021-22: Rs 12815 crore
◆ 2020-21: Rs 8434 crore
◆ 2019-20: Rs 9115 crore
◆ 2018-19: Rs 6539 crore
◆ 2017-18: Rs 3546 crore
◆ 2016-17: Rs 1521 crore
◆ 2015-16: Rs 2059 crore
◆ 2014-15: Rs 1940 crore
With collaborative efforts, India has taken several policy initiatives in the past few years to amplify its indigenous design, development, and manufacture of defence equipment, to make world-class military apparatus.
■ The Indian Defence sector, the second largest armed force, is at the cusp of revolution. Defence exports grew by 334 per cent in the last five years; India now exporting to over 75 countries due to collaborative efforts
■ India exported around Rs 1,387 crore worth of defence-related exports during the first quarter of the financial year 2022-23 (April-June)
■ The country’s defence and technology related exports touched the highest-ever figure of Rs 12,815 crore in the financial year 2021-22, a 54.1 per cent rise over the previous year.
■ It is pertinent to note that the exports in the financial year 2022 were almost eight times what they were about five years back.
■ India’s defence exports are mainly to countries like the US, the Philippines and other countries in South-East Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
■ In the past few years, the Government of India has taken various policy initiatives to encourage indigenous manufacturing of defense equipment, thereby promoting self-reliance in defense manufacturing & technology.
■ Importantly, two defense industrial corridors have been established — one each in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu to bolster indigneous manufacturing.
The Defence Ministry has set a target of Rs 1.75 lakh crore of defence production by 2025, which will include export of Rs 35,000 crore. The major role in achieving this goal with a contribution of 70-80 percent would be done by India’s Defence Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)

Someone needs to do some research as to how this Monday comes back so soon?
A thought on investing.
If you are truly bullish on India and want to create Alpha, you MUST stick to Midcap and Smallcaps.
The 'Size Anomaly' + 8% GDP growth factor.
So basically think for yourself, are you long term bullish on India where you think that the Indian GDP will grow 7-8% for the next 5-10 years?
If yes, then its just WRONG to buy largecap defensives.
Because, if the GDP fires at 7-8%, then there will be ample opportunity for small sized players to grow and due to their small profit base, their growth will be exceptional in some cases.
Hence, if we are right on the assumption that Indian GDP will grow at 7-8%, then buying midcap and smallcaps will result in 'strong earnings growth + rerating as size grows'.
I am sure that a lot of investors do NOT realize this but when they buy a stock trading at 50-80x P/E with 12-13% growth, they are basically 'Bearish' on India.Because, if the Indian GDP grew just 3-4%, then opportunities will be limited for smaller sized companies and only the very large players will gain market share.
('Big will become bigger' - something which happened in 2018-19 briefly).
Conclusion:Bullish on India and want to make Alpha - Buy midcap and smallcaps which will give growth + rerating.Bearish on India and want to make Alpha - Buy very largecap defensive.
About timing your market entry. Well, just DON'T do this. The FED first said that inflation is transitory, then they adamantly stuck to their guidance like a newbie trader which holds to his loss making position in fear of making loss.
The FED then became inflation hawks all of a sudden and now are busy raising interest rates while this inflation clearly is caused by Supply issues and nothing else.
Basically, if the sophisticated FED cannot predict inflation over 1-2 year period and neither should you bother about doing the same.
As we know, India will sell more Burgers every year for the next 20 years. And I am pretty sure it will be the same for Fans, Computers, UPI transactions etc.

National Logistics Policy
Key highlights TG @AlliesFin
Aim to reduce logistics cost from 13-14 percent to single-digit as soon as possible
Schemes like Sagarmala, Bharatmala, Dedicated Freight Corridors would improve logistics connectivity drastically.
The total capacity of Indian ports has increased significantly and the average turn-around time of container vessels has come down from 44 hours to 26 hours.
Initiatives like paperless EXIM trade process through e-sanchit, faceless assessment for customs, provisions for e-way bills, FASTag etc. have greatly increased the efficiency of the logistics sector.
Unified Logistics Interface Platform- ULIP will bring all the digital services related with the transportation sector on a single portal.
Similarly, under the policy a new digital platform for Ease of logistics Services -E-Logs has also been started. Through this portal, industry associations can directly take up any such matters which are causing problems in their operations and performance with the government agencies.
Gatishakti and National Logistics Policy together are now taking the country towards a new work culture.
This Policy is focused towards development of support infrastructure, reduction of system inefficiencies and high usage of technology to cut costs. We believe with better tracking and digitization the industry would move faster towards being more organized. This would benefit the organized players in this space.

*U.S. stocks ended lower Friday, trimming losses into the close but still booking big weekly losses, after a warning from FedEx Corp. rattled investors amid ongoing worries that another interest rate hike by the Federal Reserve next week heightens recession risks. The dollar is poised for its best week in a month.*
Risk-off sentiment went from simmer to boil in the wake of FedEx Corp's withdrawal of its earnings forecast late Thursday, citing signs of dampening global demand.
FedEx's move followed remarks from the World Bank and the IMF, both of which warned of an impending worldwide economic slowdown.
*Financial markets have priced in a 18% likelihood of a super-sized, 100 basis point increase to the Fed funds target rate on Wednesday, according to CME's FedWatch tool.*
*Dow Transports, viewed as a barometer of economic health, plummeted 5.1%.*
Dip buyers emerged in afternoon trading, with gains in some big tech names including Nvidia Corp. and Intel Corp.
*For the week, the Dow fell 4.1%, while the S&P 500 dropped 4.8% drop and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 5.5%. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq each saw their biggest weekly percentage drops since June, while the Dow had its worst week since the stretch ending Aug. 26.*
*Volume on U.S. exchanges was 16.92 billion shares, compared with the 10.72 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.*
*What drove the market?*
U.S. stocks ended down Friday, deepening losses for the week amid heightened fears of a recession.
*FedEx Corp.’s profit warning late Thursday is a sign of a slowing economy, said Michael Landsberg, an expert. Landsberg, who is expecting a “hard landing” for the U.S. economy as the Federal Reserve keeps tightening its monetary policy, said “I would not be buying the equity dip in the U.S. or in Europe.”*
*FedEx shares plunged 21.4% after the global shipper and economic bellwether late Thursday withdrew its annual outlook and forecast sharply lower quarterly profit and lower revenue. The news put pressure on other shipping stocks and dented overall investor sentiment, analysts said, as FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam told CNBC late Thursday that the global economy was likely headed for a recession.*
“The fact that FedEx expects the US economy to enter into a recession has made traders trade carefully, and there aren’t many who are willing to buy the market. It is highly likely that we will see a similar message from other companies in the coming days as well, and that may make the overall sentiment even more adverse.
