@AlliesFin Serve Stock Market's Post
Why did markets fall today
1) The markets rose over the past few months because US printed tons of money and Americans grew paper rich
2) With less avenues to spend due to Pandemic money flowed into stock markets including Indian market
3) While Domestic Institutional investors have been selling the Foreigners were busy buying and taking the market up
4) As such with such low rates in US, this strategy paid off for them
5) But all along the idea was to make the moolah and escape at the right time
6) Yesterday the Bond Market in the US saw its yield rise by about 1%. Now that's the largest rise in the last year
7) This happened because US Govt is borrowing money by selling bonds
8) Excess supply of Bonds makes it cheaper and thereby new buyers have the opportunity to earn up to 1% more (that is the extent to which the prices fell)
9) Naturally when prices fall the opportunity is there to earn more for new buyers
10) Secondly US Bond is Gold Standard in terms of safety
11) So now the FIIs were all this time investing with a simple aim to milk some quick meeting money
12) Their objective was always to make money and switch it to safe asset and thereby book their huge profits
13) They sold 8000 Cr of stock in a day which naturally got the market crashing down
14) Once they got the money they sold the rupees and purchased dollars because the US Bonds can be bought using dollars only
15) This causes the rupee the fall in value against the dollar
16) With Dollars in their hands these FIIs now have bought the US dollars
17) With the Pandemic showing signs of abating people will spend more in the US and this could cause inflation there
18) This too will have an effect of higher Bond yields and more profit booking and flight to safety
19) Brace up for more fireworks because currently markets are hugely over valued
20) Hope you understood why markets crashed today

Tech Leads U.S. Stock Rout as Bond Yields Soar: Markets Wrap
Tech shares led a rout in U.S. stocks while the selloff in global bonds deepened, with the benchmark Treasury yield spiking to a one-year high and debt from the U.K. to Australia coming under pressure.
The Nasdaq 100 tumbled 3.6%, the most since October, as investors rotated away from pandemic-era winners toward companies poised to benefit from an end to lockdowns. About 10 stocks fell for every one that gained on the S&P 500. Cathie Wood’s ARK Innovation ETF extended its decline, leaving it 15% lower for the week. Stocks popular with the day-trader crowd surged once again, with GameStop Corp. doubling at one point before ending 19% higher.
Earnings that came after the close were mixed. Airbnb Inc. rose about 4% in late trading after reporting sales that beat estimates, while DoorDash Inc. fell about 14% after losses more than doubled from a year earlier. Beyond Meat Inc. added about 7% after announcing a partnership with McDonald’s.
Ten-year Treasury yields spiked after tepid demand at an auction for government bonds, surging as much as 23 basis points to 1.6%, the highest since last February. The increase forced a crucial group of investors such as holders of mortgage securities to sell Treasuries, which in turn led to further increases in yields.
Across markets, investors are betting on a sunnier outlook for the global economy, with U.S. jobless claims data the latest to support that idea. But some traders worry that resurgent growth is already priced into stocks, and they’re staring down the risk that accelerating inflation is just around the corner, a development that would dent the appeal of equities.
“It’s all about interest rates,” said Randy Frederick, vice president of trading and derivatives for Schwab Center for Financial Research. Tech “has been a relative outperformer. As it led on the way up, it will likely lead on the way down too.”
In remarks this week, Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell offered reassurance that policy would continue to be supportive and look beyond a temporary pick-up in inflation, especially from a low base.
That’s given the bond market enough reason to keep driving yields higher. The 10-year U.S. yield adjusted for inflation rose to its highest level since June, a warning sign for riskier assets that have benefited from exceptionally loose financial conditions amid the pandemic.

@AlliesFin Serve Stock Market's Post
The rollout of vaccines and falling COVID-19 case levels also continued to stoke hope for an acceleration in economic activity this year even as the number of U.S. deaths nears a milestone of 500,000.
Rising yields and inflation worries also were seen as underlining worries over a potential hawkish turn by the Federal Reserve, even though the central bank has committed to holding off on policy changes until inflation moves above its 2% target.
The difficulty for equity investors is that the further the Fed gets behind market forecasts both for GDP and rates, the greater the worry over a tantrum,” by market participants over a potential Fed tightening.
The Fed’s deliberate efforts to displace market expectations by overshooting its 2% target should allow for further steepening of the yield curve, while real, or inflation-adjusted, rates remain negative, allowing cyclicals and companies with low variable costs to outperform.
*Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is set to testify before Congress on monetary policy this week. His comments on rates and inflation could determine the market direction for the week.*
*The Conference Board said its leading economic indicators index had increased 0.5 points in January to a reading of 110.3. Economists had expected the index to show a rise of 0.4 points.*
*Treasury yields climbed and a key part of the curve -- the gap between 5- and 30-year yields -- touched the highest level in more than five years. Yields rose in Asia, while European government yields reversed an advance and edged lower.*
The Dow was lead by Discovery Inc, which jumped 8.9% after the media company said it was expecting 12 million global paid streaming subscribers by the end of February, as coronavirus restrictions kept people at home.
On the pandemic front, the White House said that it expects to ship out millions of delayed coronavirus vaccine doses this week after a sweeping winter storm disrupted logistics. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Sunday that a New York resident has tested positive for the Covid-19 variant first identified in South Africa.
*Commodities were almost uniformly green. Brent oil climbed above $65 a barrel as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. predicted prices could advance into the $70s in coming months. Copper briefly rose above $9,000 a metric ton for the first time in nine years, taking another step closer to an all-time high set in 2011 as investors bet that supply tightness will increase as the world recovers from the pandemic.*
Volume on U.S. exchanges was 14.38 billion shares, compared with the 16.05 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
European stocks closed lower on Monday amid cautious trade in global markets.
Developments surrounding the pandemic and vaccine rollout remain in focus. The U.K. on Monday unveiled how it plans to lift lockdown measures gradually in the coming months, as its vaccination rollout maintains its good pace.
*On the data front, Germany’s Ifo Institute business climate index rose in February, with sentiment in Europe’s largest economy improving by more than expected on both current conditions and expectations.*
*On Monday, European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said in a speech that the central bank is “closely monitoring the evolution of long-term nominal bond yields.” European sovereign bonds yields moved lower in response to her remarks.*

*The S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed lower on Monday as climbing Treasury yields and prospects of rising inflation triggered valuation concerns, hitting shares of high-flying growth companies. S&P 500 books fifth straight loss (its longest such streak in a year), Nasdaq sinks 2.5% as elevated bond yields weigh on tech shares. The Dow Jones Industrials benchmark eked out modest gains, amid worries that rising bond yields could render equities too expensive. The Dow Jones Industrial Average reversed a 200-point loss to close 27.37 points higher. The last time the Dow ended higher, while the Nasdaq fell more than 2.4% was May 29, 2001. U.S. benchmark 10-year Treasury yields were up at 1.363%. Since the beginning of February, 10-year yields have risen about 26 basis points, on track for their largest monthly gain in three years. Gains for energy shares and financial companies limited losses on the Dow Jones Industrial Average*
Long-term Treasury yields were on the climb again Monday, after last week notching their biggest rise in six weeks, sapping some enthusiasm of the stock-market bulls.
*The Treasury yields are up, but a point to be noted that junk bond yields hit all-time lows last week, suggesting there has been a shift from the safety of Treasuries to the riskiness of corporates among investors. That’s bullish for stocks. Many on Wall Street still believe that the jump in bond yields reflects a sign of growing confidence in the economic recovery and stocks should be able to absorb higher rates amid strong earnings. Given that we are in the early stages of an economic recovery, monetary and fiscal policy remains supportive, the sharp rebound in earnings, and favorable relative valuations, we maintain our overweight to equities.*
*Higher “risk-free” yields can make it difficult to justify high valuations for equities, as it reduces the value of their future profits to investors. In a backdrop of rising rates and faster economic growth, technology companies with rapidly increasing earnings become less attractive to investors.*
Definitely, yields are the big thing, and investors also have been worried in recent weeks about the threat of “a big spike” in inflation..
Yields have been boosted by expectations that aggressive rounds of fiscal spending on top of extraordinary loose monetary policy by the Federal Reserve will stoke near-term inflationary pressures.
The bond market appears to be pricing in strong economic data and GDP gains ahead, driven by increased consumer and business activity, and further pushed by more expected government stimulus.
The recent weakness in tech, while so-called cyclical stocks benefited, underscored more of a reflection of pent-up expectations for a reopening of the economy.
Congress is expected to pass another round of aid spending set to come in near President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion package. Investors also were penciling in the possibility of a large, long-term round of infrastructure spending.

U.S. Bond Yields Touch One-Year High; Stocks Mixed: Markets Wrap
U.S. bond yields surged to the highest in a year, while American stocks climbed to records as optimism over the economic recovery continued to ripple through markets.
The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note increased as much as nine basis points to 1.30%, the highest since February 2020. Global bonds extended the worst start to a year since 2013.
The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average indexes all set records Tuesday, before easing from the highs. The MSCI benchmark for emerging and developed market stocks snapped an 11 session winning streak.
The reflation trade is powering assets tied to economic growth and price pressure, including commodities and cyclical stocks. At the same time, investors are riding a wave of speculative euphoria from penny stocks to Bitcoin amid abundant policy support.
“We certainly have data that suggests that being more glass half full than glass half empty remains the right posture,” said Eric Freedman, chief investment officer at U.S. Bank Wealth Management. “People are looking at parts of the world as well as sectors that have been underperforming and saying ‘hey this is maybe the next part of the market that heads higher.’”
*Here’s a look at how it’s playing out in global markets :*
*Stocks :*
The S&P 500 fell less than 0.1% as of 4:01 p.m. in New York. It has added 4.7% so far in 2021. The Russell 2000, which has surged 15% this year, edged lower.
In Japan, the Nikkei 225 Stock Average extended its advance past the 30,000 level. European markets were mostly little changed after a rally on Monday.
*Commodities :*
Brent oil is holding near a 13-month high after freezing temperatures crippled the Texas power system and disrupted crude production. Nearly 5 million people across the U.S were plunged into darkness as homes and businesses lost power. Natural gas futures for March delivery surged as much as 10%.
In metals, copper climbed to the highest since 2012 and tin extended a dramatic surge. Citigroup Inc. forecasts copper prices will rally to $10,000 a ton in six to 12 months on a better-than-expected recovery in demand, most notably outside China.
U.S. Energy Crisis Deepens With Nearly 5 Million in the Dark
*Bonds :*
Global debt markets are extending a selloff as investors shift money to riskier assets.
German bunds and U.K. gilts both saw benchmark yields rise.
The Treasury 30-year equivalent pushed above 2%.
*Currencies :*
The dollar strengthened against most of its major peers. The pound edged higher to $1.3911.
Bitcoin crossed a new milestone, surpassing $50,000 as the blistering rally continues to captivate investors. Tesla Inc.’s announcement that it added $1.5 billion in Bitcoin to its balance sheet was the most visible recent catalyst. Companies such as Mastercard Inc. and Bank of New York Mellon Corp. have also moved to make it easier for customers to use cryptocurrencies.

Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was only a few meters from the finish line, but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race. A Spanish man, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him and, realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running. Mutai did not know Spanish and did not understand.
Realizing what was going on, Fernandez pushed Mutai to victory. A reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" Ivan replied, "My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life where we push ourselves and help each other win." The reporter insisted "But why did you let the Kenyan win?" Ivan replied, "I didn't let him win, he was going to win. The race was his."
The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!" Ivan looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it?" The values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn? Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses instead of helping to strengthen them.

In public health news, the U.S. averaged 136,438 new cases a day in the past week, down 30% from the average two weeks ago. Hospitalizations have also been falling, according to the COVID Tracking Project. There were 91,440 COVID-19 patients in U.S. hospitals on Wednesday, down from 92,880 a day earlier and the lowest level since Nov. 27.
*Against that backdrop, investors are also awaiting the next steps on a new fiscal relief package. President Joe Biden said he was open to sending $1,400 payments to a smaller group of Americans in the next round of coronavirus aid and changing the overall price tag of his $1.9 trillion plan, The Wall Street Journal reported. Democrats in the U.S. Senate were poised to take a first step toward the ultimate passage of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief proposal. Republicans have countered with a more modest $618 billion package, which includes new stimulus checks of $1,000 per person.*
*Also on investors’ radar was a meeting of financial regulators, including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, to discuss the market volatility related to GameStop Corp. (-42.1%) and AMC Entertainment Holdings (-21%) and other so-called meme stocks. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has said that she and financial market regulators needed to “understand deeply” what happened in the recent retail trading frenzy before taking any action.*
*In other economic reports, U.S. productivity dropped to a 4.8% annual rate in the fourth quarter. Separately, U.S. factory orders for manufactured goods rose 1.1% in December after a 1.3% gain in the prior month, the Commerce Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal were expecting a 0.7% gain.*
*Many on Wall Street remain optimistic that the vaccine rollout, coupled with easy monetary policy and potentially more fiscal support, will sprout stronger growth in earnings and drive the market to new highs. “We believe that we are still in the early stages of a new bull market, transitioning from the ‘hope’ phase to a longer ‘growth’ phase as strong profit growth emerges”, said a strategist from Goldman Sachs.*
Volume was down versus last week’s levels. Volume on U.S. exchanges was 14.09 billion shares on Thursday, compared with the 15.5 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days.
European stocks closed mixed on Thursday as investors remained focused on earnings reports and developments on the coronavirus pandemic.
*The Bank of England on Thursday left monetary policy unchanged following its first meeting of 2021, with its main lending rate held at 0.1% and target stock of asset purchases kept at £895 billion ($1.2 trillion).*
The Bank’s Prudential Regulation Authority also said in a letter to lenders that British banks will need at least six months to prepare for a potential shift to negative interest rates.
*Bayer* shares climbed 5% after the German pharmaceutical giant reached a $2 billion deal to settle future compensation claims in the U.S. over cancers linked to its Roundup weedkiller.
At the bottom of the European blue chip index, consumer goods group *Unilever* fell 6% after full-year results.
*Currencies*
• The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.4%.
• The euro dipped 0.6% to $1.1965.
• The Japanese yen depreciated 0.5% to 105.54 per dollar.
*Bonds*
• The yield on 10-year Treasuries rose less than one basis point to 1.14%.
• Germany’s 10-year yield climbed one basis point to -0.45%.
• Britain’s 10-year yield jumped seven basis points to 0.44%.
*Commodities*
• West Texas Intermediate crude rose 1.2% to $56.35 a barrel.
• Gold slid 2.2% to $1,794.01 an ounce.
Silver sank 2% to $26.36 per ounce

*Major U.S. stock-market benchmarks climbed Thursday, lifting the S&P 500 index and Nasdaq Composite to new records as better unemployment data (suggesting the labor market may be stabilizing), falling coronavirus cases and deaths, some upbeat corporate earnings and the prospect of more fiscal stimulus augured well for further economic recovery this year. The Dow and S&P 500 rose for a fourth straight day. A widely watched segment of the Treasury yield curve steepened to levels last seen in 2015.*
*Market participants were heartened by U.S. jobless benefit claims falling for a third straight week to the lowest number of claims since November, but the reading remains elevated compared to pre-pandemic levels.*
*U.S. initial jobless claims fell by 33,000 to 779,000 at end of January, compared with economists’ consensus estimates for 835,000 from 847,000 the week before, according to economists surveyed by Econoday. The report comes ahead of the official January employment report due on Friday from the Labor Department.*
Claims are running three to four times more than during the pre-pandemic period. We still have an enormous unemployment issue.
*Investors will be watching closely the U.S. government’s monthly employment report due out Friday. According to a Reuters poll of economists, payrolls likely increased by 50,000 jobs in January after declining by 140,000 in December.*
*Thursday also marked a busy day of earnings and economic reports with investors looking for signs that the economy is rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic, despite an elevated case numbers and the emergence of new variants of the coronavirus amid the rollout of effective vaccines.*
In earnings, no fewer than 42 companies reported quarterly results on Thursday, representing the busiest day on the calendar for fourth-quarter results. Stronger-than-expected results so far in the fourth quarter have driven up analysts’ expectations, and S&P 500 companies are now on track to post earnings growth for the quarter instead of a decline as initially expected.
*EBay* jumped more than 5% after beating on both the top and bottom lines and issuing a rosier-than-expected forecast for the first quarter. *PayPal* gained more than 7% after strong quarterly results, while *Qualcomm* slipped over 8% after reporting revenues below consensus estimates for its fiscal first quarter.
*Apple* rose 2.6% after CNBC reported that it is close to finalizing a deal with Hyundai-Kia to produce driverless cars.
Headliners included Ford Motor (+1.52%) and Snapchat parent Snap Inc. (-1.6%), and also include results from the likes of Clorox Co. (-6.32%), Yum Brands (-1.66%), and Merck & Co. (-1.67%), which announced that Kenneth Frazier, its CEO would be stepping down after 10 years at the helm of the drug company.
