Dollar falls to more than two-year lows as stimulus hopes stay high
The euro, Aussie and New Zealand dollars all posted more than two-year highs against the struggling greenback on Wednesday as investors bet on more U.S. fiscal support and positioned for year-end in light trading volume.
Investors are betting that an improving economic outlook as COVID-19 vaccines are rolled out and unprecedented fiscal and monetary stimulus will boost global growth and asset prices in 2021.
U.S. economic growth is expected to drag behind peers, however, with the U.S. currency also suffering from rising fiscal and current account deficits as the government increases spending to tackle coronavirus-related business shutdowns.
“The start of Covid-19 immunization campaigns in several countries as well as additional U.S. fiscal support have reduced downside risk to the global economy and bode well for general financial market sentiment. This remains a drag for USD,” Elias Haddad, senior currency Strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia, said in a report on Wednesday.
The dollar fell 0.4% against a basket of currencies to 89.68 after earlier dropping to 89.56, the lowest since April 2018. It is down more than 7% this year.
Trading volumes are thin with many investors out between the Christmas and New Year holidays. The euro reached $1.2310, before falling back to $1.2279, up 0.30% on the day.
The Aussie surged to $0.7680, and was last up 0.9% at $0.7677. The kiwi reached $0.7199.
It was the highest level for all three currencies against the U.S. dollar since April 2018.
The dollar also slipped 0.5% to 103.05 yen. It is holding just above a nine-month low of 102.86 yen reached on Dec. 17.
Optimism of further stimulus came even after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday put off a vote on increasing COVID-19 relief checks from $600 to $2,000.
U.S. President-elect Joe Biden is expected to push for more measures to support the U.S. economy after he is inaugurated next month.
Sterling also jumped before lawmakers on Wednesday voted on the Brexit deal Prime Minister Boris Johnson clinched last week.
The agreement avoids a chaotic no-deal exit, but does not cover services, which make up 80% of the British economy.
The pound gained 0.7% to $1.3601. It is holding below the $1.3625 level reached earlier this month, the highest since May 2018.

U.S. Stocks Drop After Hope Fades for Expanded Aid: Markets Wrap
U.S. stocks pulled back from record highs, with small-cap shares posting their biggest drop in a month, as prospects faded for bigger government aid checks to individuals. The dollar weakened.
The Russell 2000 Index tumbled almost 2%, while the S&P 500 finished only slightly lower. A gauge of global equities was set to close at a record after the U.S. House backed President Donald Trump’s proposal to boost aid checks for individuals, but pulled back from its high of the day as Senate Republicans blocked an attempt by Democrats to increase the direct payments to $2,000 from $600.
The year is coming to a close with risk assets such as stocks, corporate bonds and Bitcoin just off record highs. As investors try to gauge the impact of the pandemic and the pace of U.S. vaccine distribution, the S&P 500 is set to end the year 15% higher.
On the coronavirus front, more restrictions are being imposed to fight the spread of the new, more infectious strain. Covid-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. reached new highs, while Southern California plans to extend a regional stay-at-home order. South Korea’s daily toll of fatalities rose to a record, while Thailand reported its first virus death since November.
In Europe, the Stoxx 600 rose as the FTSE 100 Index rallied in the first session since the U.K.’s Christmas Eve trade deal with the European Union. Uncertainty about what accord will be struck on financial services weighed on Lloyds Banking Group Plc, NatWest Group Plc and Barclays Plc.
Elsewhere, the pound recouped some of Monday’s decline.
Here are some key events coming up:
U.S. pending home sales and goods trade balance data are due Wednesday.
U.S. initial jobless claims figures are published Thursday.
Most global stock markets are closed Friday for New Year’s Day.

How the score of 36 was scored differently in #cricket matches
#SunilGavaskar scored 36 runs in 60 overs.
#YuvarajSingh scored 36 runs in 1 over
#TeamIndia scored 36 runs in 1 innings.
What can you learn here from an investing point of view ?
1) Like Gavaskar innings, sometimes your Investment can give you lesser returns for a prolonged tenure
2) Like Yuvaraj, sometimes your investment can deliver highest returns in least possible time.
3) Like team India, sometimes all your assets can perform terribly.
However in spite of these, Gavaskar was one of the finest batsman, Yuvaraj was a great player and team India ranks at the top.

*Fatal Landslide in Brazil Pushes Iron Ore Toward Record.*
Prices of the steel ingredient rose 7.8% Monday as investors bet on tightening supply at a time of strong demand.
SYDNEY—Iron-ore prices are surging toward a record as a landslide at a Brazilian iron-ore mine intensifies concerns about supply and Chinese demand runs hot.
The price of iron ore soared 7.8% to $176.90 a metric ton Monday, its highest since September 2011 and almost double its value at the start of the year, according to data from S&P Global Platts.
Iron ore, the main ingredient in steel, is one of the world’s most-traded commodities and is among the best performing assets of 2020. It is now less than 10% from a record price of $193 a ton reached in February 2011.
The landslide last week at Vale SA’s Córrego do Feijão mine, which killed one worker, has raised fresh concerns about supplies from Brazil. Shipments from that country—the second biggest exporter of iron ore, after Australia—have yet to fully recover from earlier waste-dam collapses and pandemic-related disruptions to port and rail facilities.
The city of Brumadinho, in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state, where the Córrego do Feijão mine is located, has suspended Vale’s operating license for seven days, Vale said. It is the same part of Brazil where a dam burst in 2019, killing 270 people.
“As it is close to where the original dam failure occurred, the market is becoming increasingly concerned that Vale will struggle to hit its new, lower target for output,” said Daniel Hynes, senior commodity strategist at Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Ltd.
The market was caught out this month when Vale said it would fail to meet an earlier production target for 2020 and set a 2021 goal well below analysts’ expecta-tions, Mr. Hynes said. Vale produces about 20% of the world’s iron ore traded by sea.
There are also concerns about supplies from Australia as the country heads into its annual cyclone season, while China—the top buyer of iron ore globally—has taken aim at commodities from coal to wine with tariffs and other restrictions on imports as part of a broader diplomatic dispute.
“There is no wonder the market is placing a supply risk premium to prices at the moment,” Mr. Hynes said.
Stimulus in China and a relatively low price for metallurgical coal, also used to make steel, have given mills the flexibility to pay more for iron ore, Australia’s government said in a report Monday.
China produces more than half of the world’s steel, and has been churning it out at near-record rates recently. Its crude steel output totaled 92.2 million tons in October, up 13% on the same month a year earlier, according to the World Steel Association. November data are due to be published later Tuesday.
A number of analysts boosted their forecasts for iron ore in recent weeks as prices rose.
J.P. Morgan lifted its 2021 price forecast by 20% to $126 a ton, citing strong Chinese steel output and the softer-than-expected production forecasts from Vale.
“China data keeps getting better,” J.P. Morgan analyst Lyndon Fagan wrote in a Dec. 14 note. Gauges of China’s manufactur-ing and nonmanufacturing activity recently posted their highest levels in three and eight years, respectively, signaling a broadening recovery in the world’s second-largest economy.
Speculators have also been stoking the rally, analysts say. Jefferies Financial Group Inc. on Dec. 10 forecast the iron-ore price would peak between $180 and $200 a ton in the first quarter of 2021.
Still, the price for the steelmaking commodity should retreat in the year ahead as Chinese demand cools and supplies recover, said Capital Economics analyst Samuel Burman. He forecasts the price to return to $100 a ton by the end of next year.
Citigroup Inc. has the same forecast for end-of-2021 prices, although the bank expects iron ore to remain well

Intraday level can help to take a trade in intra day set up.

Asian market Flat
SGX NIFTY 20 points Down

#STEEL #STOCKS : Sources say steel cos hike prices for second time in December 2020. Steel prices hiked by Rs 1,500/tonne, after Rs 2,500/tonne hiked in 1st week of December 2020. Key reasons for the hike are strong demand & higher iron ore costs.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq touched all-time highs on Thursday as investors looked past bleak economic data, while remaining focused on a COVID-19 vaccine, with the blue-chip Dow getting a boost from Boeing shares. Small cap Russell 2000 also inched up a bit higher.
Investors in Asia geared up for modest stock gains on Friday as U.S. legislators wrangled over a fiscal stimulus and negotiations over a Brexit trade deal continued. Markets in South Korea moved into fresh life high but stocks in Japan were trading down on some profit taking.
US dollar index dropped further into 30 month low at 90.7, 10 year bond traded lower below 0.91, Cboe Vix moved higher above 21.
Crude futures moved higher WTI nearing 46, Brent nearing 49 as risk on trade gaining momentum.
Both Nifty and Bank Nifty are witnessing some consolidation with minor upward bias but for traders stocks outside the index offer lots of opportunities to gain from. The big tailwind for EM equities and commodity in the form of relentless fall in $ index is a big theme to look for in the immediate future. The other themes that seems to be gaining momentum are outperformance of 'value vs growth' and narrowing the gap between performance of EM vs DM in favour of EM.
Traders may continue to trail the stop loss on individual positions.
